Bar Association to teach sexual-harassment prevention
The training is aimed at helping businesses stay compliant with state law
Businesses looking to comply with the mandatory sexual harassment training California law that took effect in January will have an opportunity to do so on Thursday, Aug. 22, as part of a seminar by the Santa Clarita Bar Association.
The event is designed to provide cost-effective training for members of the local business community starting at 8 a.m. at the Valencia Country Club, located at 27330 Tourney Road. Check-in and a networking opportunity are scheduled at 7:45 a.m.
Effective Jan. 1, Senate Bill 1343 requires employers with five or more employees to provide training to all workers, including both supervisory and nonsupervisory employees, by Jan. 1, 2020. Supervisors are required to receive two hours of mandatory sexual harassment prevention training and one hour for non-supervisors.
This new requirement shifts the threshold number of employees required to receive training dramatically from the previous requirement, which applied to employers with 50 workers or more to provide supervisors with two hours of training within six months of hire and every two years thereafter.
“For many small businesses, the cost and time commitment associated with providing a code-compliant training can be daunting,” read a statement by the Bar Association.
The one-hour training will be offered by attorney Brian Koegle from Poole & Shaffery, LLP. Covered topics include discrimination, harassment and retaliation in the workplace. The course provides a comprehensive look at the state’s anti-harassment laws, risk and exposure for “bad actors” and practical ways to avoid liability-inducing events and interactions.
Attendees will be provided with a certificate of completion, according to the Bar Association.
Tickets are $40 per attendee and breakfast is included. To reserve a spot, visit scvbar.org, send a message to info@scvbar.org or call 661-505-8670.
