With autumn here and leaves changing colors, here are a few tips to have an interior decor to match

Do-it-yourself, or DIY, projects have become a popular term among crafty people. Websites such as Pinterest and Instagram have become a platform for the growing trend of DIY tutorials that people can follow to recreate their own projects at home.

As autumn settles in, fall holidays such as Halloween and Thanksgiving inspire people to decorate homes with fall DIY projects.

When beginning projects, home-improvement stores give many autumn decor options. Home improvement stores offer a wide range of products that can help complete your project.

During the month of October, DIY haunted houses and outdoor/indoor pumpkin decorating are popular projects for Halloween, according to Lowe’s and Home Depot’s website.

Popular products to complete a spooky haunted house are outdoor Halloween decorations, which include faux gravestones, plastic skeletons and fog machines to create an eerie graveyard setting.

Items that can give your house a subtle haunted feel are green and purple light bulbs, fake cobwebs to drape over lights, and candles to give your house a daunting look.

For a less frightening DIY project, pumpkin decorating is another popular trend that can double as Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations.

Autumn calls for deep, earthy colors, such as browns, oranges and dark reds. Often, houses are decorated with pumpkins, gourds and squashes, which gives homes a rustic look.

Popular items for neutral autumn decorating are

faux leaves, which can be turned into fall wreaths or garlands to hang over fireplaces or fences. Decorative hay bales can be used as pumpkin stands while friendly scarecrows add a welcoming look to front porches.

Decorating pumpkins is another growing trend that substitutes for pumpkin carving. Home improvement stores sell many products that act as an alternative to carving. Pumpkin stickers give the illusion of a carved pumpkin without the mess, acrylic paint can be used to add color and get creative with jack-o-lanterns or plastic and mesh pumpkins, which can be used for future holidays.

For longer-lasting decorations, Sebastian Hale of Lowe’s Corporate Communications said fall landscaping is a popular project during the season. Peonies, ferns and irises are just some of the

few suggestions to achieve a fallthemed garden.

Although DIY projects can be a fun activity to do individually or with others, some questions to ask before getting started on a project are:

Are you physically capable of handling the project? Not all projects are as easy as they may seem. Speaking with a home-improvement professional can provide some insight.

Do you have the time? Some projects will take more time than others. Be sure to plan ahead so projects won’t go unfinished.

Can you afford it? Larger projects will be more costly, but something as simple as decorating can add up. Set a budget for yourself and stick to it.

Lastly, can you do this alone? Light decorating might not require additional help, but larger projects can be challenging, plus it could be fun working with a partner.
