Kim Kurowski has been in the Santa Clarita business community for more than 30 years, and on Tuesday, she was recognized for that commitment.

State Sen. Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, honored Kurowski’s business A-1 Party as his October choice for the 21st Senate District Small Business of the Month at an event held at Valencia Acura.

“Kim has been so involved in the community … and when you look around this room, you can just see what a wide swath she’s cut in our community and all the people that she’s touched,” Wilk said.

Kurowski started her business more than 31 years ago, moving from a storefront to her home in 1994.

“The community has done well for me, and I feel like I need to give back to the community,” Kurowski said. “It’s a good feeling to do that, so I’ll keep doing that as long as I keep blowing up those balloons.”

Today, A-1 Party provides party supplies for all of the Santa Clarita Valley and the surrounding areas while Kurowski is known for her reliability and flexibility.

“She always says yes, whenever I call her, whatever I need, she’s always there,” Vanessa Wilk said.

Kurowski’s involvement in the community doesn’t stop there. She is also on the Valley Industry Association board, is former chair of the SCV Chamber of Commerce, a member of Soroptimist and Zonta Club, among other things.

“Obviously we all know this is a very special place to do business and be supported, but nonetheless it’s always very challenging, and Kim has always been an extremely important piece of the fabric of this community, of what it means to be in Santa Clarita and to do business in Santa Clarita,” said Troy Hooper, former chair of the Chamber of

Commerce.

Two out of three workers in the private sector are employed by a small business, according to Wilk, which is why he said an award like this is so important. “We created this award to thank and salute people who pour their heart and soul into their community and into their business.”
