Concern from Chase management had Schaefer rousted by police, both during the act of painting and later at his home. Schaefer’s treatment as a criminal resulted in considerable press attention, which led to an auction sale of the first burning bank painting for over $20,000 dollars. Expanding on the burning bank theme, Schaefer draws from a wide range of inputs: from cityscapes, architecture, historical photographic imagery, art historical scenes, and photographs lifted from public photo sites.
