CITY URGES RESIDENTS TO SHOP — AND EAT — LOCALLY

- By Signal Staff

As local businesses continue to reopen, the city of Santa Clarita is urging residents to shop local this summer.

The pandemic has greatly impacted businesses, employees and the SCV community, so it is essential now more than ever to support them, according to city officials.

City officials suggest taking advantage of curbside pickup, dining on a restaurant’s patio with family, ordering takeout or planning a “staycation” at a local hotel.

Shopping locally not only supports the local economy, but also helps keep Santa Clarita’s diverse array of businesses in operation.

More than 100 businesses, including restaurants, offices, retail businesses, auto shops, medical facilities and more, throughout the Santa Clarita Valley have taken the Safer Business Commitment, a program launched by the city that allows local businesses to agree to follow a series of recommended safety guidelines to protect employees and patrons.

In addition, the city has introduced the Eat Local program, which hopes to encourage more residents to dine locally by allowing qualified restaurants to expand their outdoor services onto private sidewalks and parking lots, providing safety and flexibility for both the restaurant and its customers while indoor occupancy limits remain in place.

During last week’s meeting, the City Council also proclaimed the first week of July “Independents Week” as a way to spotlight and celebrate local businesses.

This annual celebration is set to recognize the valuable contributions that local independent businesses make in the community by encouraging residents to shop and eat locally.

Through the pandemic, the city has continued to work with the SCV Chamber of Commerce, SCV Economic Development Corp. and Valley Industry Association of Santa Clarita to develop programs aimed at encouraging residents to shop locally.
