Classic Car & Motorcycle Show rolls into town.

Vintage vehicles spanning more than 80 years of transporta­tion history will roll into Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works on Saturday, June 18 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. as the museum celebrates the annual Hay Creek Classic Car & Motorcycle Show. Rows of antique cars will be on display throughout the day. Also during this June Third Saturday at Joanna Furnace event, local veterans of all U.S. Wars will be honored.

“Our goal is to make available a unique perspectiv­e of history from those who were there,” said Mark Zerr, Hay Creek Valley Historical Associatio­n Executive Director. “We will honor the attending Veterans of WWII and beyond. We want to thank them for their service and sacrifice. In addition, we want to provide the opportunit­y and encourage the younger generation to speak with these men and women, with the goal to learn from them.”

At 9:45 a.m. the official veterans’ celebratio­n begins with the flag raising and the National Anthem sung by Phyllis Hummel.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. visitors can “Meet A Vet.” Veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf War will be located in the tent behind the main stage. They will have table set ups of personal memorabili­a from their service and

will talk to visitors about their war experience­s. Also, visitors can experience numerous re-enactors and historians portraying military personnel from all branches of the U.S. military including a Civil War re- enactor, Revolution­ary War reenactor and more than a dozen re-enactors from the Greater Pennsylvan­ia Military Vehicle Historical Society with 20th century vehicles and military displays. Visitors will be able to talk with all the re-enactors from various military units and see their encampment­s, vehicles, weapons and equipment.

This free admission event runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day begins with the famous Joanna Furnace Breakfast Buffet served from 7 to 11 a.m. The monthly flea and vendor market opens at 7 a.m. The

Food Court serving breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, ice cream and cold drinks will be open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

From 9 to 11 a.m. visitors will be able to visit Mechanical Technology Building and the Saw Mill to see numerous 19th century manufactur­ing equipment in operation and watch logs being sawn into beams and lumber. At 11 a.m. in the Mechanical technology Building, Mr. George Loughery will be presenting a ModelT Transmissi­on Seminar showing the simplicity and uniqueness of Henry Ford’s Model-Transmissi­on.

At 1 p.m., drivers and spectators will enjoy the Hay Creek Hill Climb pitting Model-T’s and then pre-1940 cars against each other in a show of hill climbing effectiven­ess.

As a salute to area par-

ticipating veterans, at 1:45 p.m., all will be participat­ing in the Veterans in Review. The veterans of all ages will take their places on a wagon and will ride by waiting visitors behind a motorcycle escort.

Local Veterans (or family members of a WWII Veteran), or anyone who served on the Home Front, can share their stories. Anyone interested in setting up a display, sharing personal stories or even speaking on stage for a few minutes that day, please contact the Joanna Furnace office at 610286-0388.

At 2:30 p.m. veterans from the Joanna Ameri-

can Legion Post #537 will perform a Flag Retirement Ceremony. Any visitors who may have torn and tattered f lags are encouraged to bring them along so that they may be honorably disposed of.

Throughout the day veterans will be giving special personal presentati­ons in the speakers’ tent.

Any classic car or motorcycle owner who wishes to bring a vehicle to the event can show their vehicle for a donation fee, which will be collected from all classic vehicles.

All registered vehicles

will be judged. Awards and trophies will be awarded at 2:55 p.m. Note that registrati­on will take place from 7 to 11 a.m. on the day of the event.

This event takes place at Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works, and admission is free. Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works is located three miles north of Morgantown, nine miles south of Reading, on PA Route 10, turn onto Furnace Road.
