PIAA CLASS AAAA BASEBALL GM run ends against reigning runner-up
Berks champ Gov. Mifflin falls in first round to Wyoming Valley West, 3-1
The Gov. Miff lin baseball team’s run in the PIAA Class AAAA Championships ended in the first round against Wyoming Valley West in a 3-1 defeat on June 6.
The District 3 runner-up Mustangs were unable to knock off the District 2 champion and defending state silver medalist Spartans.
Gov. Mifflin starter Noah We- ber performed admirably, going six innings allowing zero earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. But the Mustangs’ defense committed four errors. WVW scored two runs in the first inning, both unearned.
Ajay Sczepkowski’s RBI single in the third inning was the only run the Mustangs could manage against WVW starter Tyler Yankosky, who struck out 12 in a three-hitter. Yankosky drove in a run for the Spartans
while shortstop Nick Hogan was 2-for-3. Wyoming Valley West’s bid to return to the state final was cut short on June 9 in a 4-2 defeat to Boyertown.
Third baseman Chad Kleinsmith and first baseman Phillip Henry (double) were the only other Mifflin players to record hits.
Gov. Mifflin concluded its season with a 17-9 record and won the Berks championship for a second straight season.
The loss marked the end of the scholastic careers of seniors Kleinsmith, shortstop Hunter Reeser, catcher Earl Kochel, outfielders Dylan Louviaux and Zach Wyrick, as well as Ethan Taveras, Jacob Ruoss and John Davis.
