Exeter bounces back, beats Berks Catholic

- By Jeff Dewees For Digital First Media

Exeter rebounded from a tough loss to Gov. Mifflin the previous week to defeat previously unbeaten Berks Catholic 35-20 Friday night at Don Thomas Stadium in a Berks League intersectional contest.

The win moved the Section 1 Eagles above the .500 mark, to 3-2. The Section 2 Saints fell to 4-1.

Exeter quarterback Brandon Unterkoefler clinched the verdict in the fourth quarter with a 44-yard touchdown run. He proved to be a thorn in the side of the BC all night, with 18 rushes for 156 yards, including an ice-breaking touchdown in the first half, to complement 157 yards passing, on 9 of 16 with a third TD.

Unterkoefler found Matt Feeney for a 4-yard strike to give the host Eagles a 14-0 edge, before Nick Sarangoulis score the first of his two touchdown on a five-yard scamper to push the lead to 21-0.

Exeter’s defense played a huge role in preserving a firsthalf shutout when the Eagles stuffed BC’s Marcus Wilson on fourth down from the 1-yard line with 19 seconds left in the half.

Sarnagoulis’s second touchdown, a 1-yard run, made it 28-0 in the third quarter.

But the Saints crawled back into it with a second half rally by outscoring the hosts 20-7 to pull with a touchdown. Quarterback Terrance Derr tossed the first of his two scoring strikes to Brian Tanis to get BC on the board. Graham Gluek’s 2-yard plunge tightened the margin, then Derr hooked up with Trevor Leamer from eight yards out to cut it to 28-0. The PAT try on that score failed.

But Unterkoefler secured the win his second rushing TD to salt it away for the Eagles.

Sarangoulis rushed for 74 yards on 16 carries. Wilson led BC on the ground with 79 on 13. Derr was an efficient 11 of 16 for

166 yards under center.

IELBOONE0>> The Mustangs moved to 4-1 and 2- 0 in Berks 1 by scoring five firsthalf touchdowns to throttle the Blazers (2-3, 1-1). Aaron Grill caught two touchdown passes of 17 and 66 yards, respectively, and ran for a third. Mustang QB Kamron Wolfe attempted nine passes, completing five, but they went for a cumulative 137 yards and two scores. Boone QB Josh Ehst was 11 of 20 for 56 yards and was picked off twice.

This Saturday night encounter at Tigers Stadium was a heartbreaker for the hosts, as Reading’s overtime touchdown and successful PAT conversion by Edwin Navis proved to be the difference in the Berks 1 encounter. Tied at 22 at the end of regulation, Fleetwood (1- 4, 0-2) took a 28-22 lead on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Koenig to Michael Wilkerson – but the Tigers missed on a 2-point conversion pass. Reading tied it on their OT possession when Isiah Giddens went the distance on the first snap. The Red Knights (3-2, 1-0) tied it a 22 with 1:50 left in regulation on Giddens’ 17-yard TD pass to Michael Hibbert and a 2-point run from Kelvin Toro. Brendan Jocsak rushed for 154 yards on 29 carries for the Tigers; Hibbert went for 112 on 11 for the Knights.

The Cougars (3-2, 0-1) saw their three-game winning streak snapped by the host Raiders (3-2, 1-0), who scored 35 first-half points in cruising to the victory. TV’s David Sabulsky had touchdown runs of 43 and 20 yards and caught a 7-yard pass for a third score, part of a huge night for him. He rushed for 163 yards on 20 totes. Logan Bachman, off to a sterling start at running back for Kutztown through four weeks, was held to just 18 yards on 12 attempts. Brayden Eck threw for 157 yards and one TDon9 of 17 passing for the Cougars.
