Wyo’s Cullen wins AA boys’ race

Class AA It was a big day for Joe Cullen and the Wyomissing boys team in Saturday’s PIAA District 3 Class AA championsh­ip meet at big Spring High School.

Cullen was the race’s overall winner, covering the course in 16:35 to edge out York Suburban’s duo of Bryce Ohl (second) and Jarrett Raudenski (third), both of whom clocked 16:40s. Cullen’s fast finish sparked the Spartans to a second-place finish in the team standings, their 101 points topped only by champion York Suburban (49).

Wyomissing was bolstered by Chip Schroder’s fifth-place showing (16:52), as well as a 20th by Ben Kuhn (17:18), a 30th from Ryan Vargo (17:37) and a 45th by Josh Diehl (17:54). They were one of three district teams qualifying for the PIAA Championsh­ip Meet next weekend at Hershey’s Parkview Course, joined by York Suburban and third-place Milton Hershey School.

Other Berks runners with Top 10 finishes were Schuylkill Valley’s Ben Reisenweav­er (seventh, 16:55) and Hamburg’s Wyatt Conrad (ninth, 16:59). The Hawks’ Levi Halye (18th, 17:13). Wyomissing’s Ben Kuhn (20th, 17:18), Conrad Weiser’s Van Wirebach (26th, 17:32) and Fleetwood’s Quinten Collinge (27th, 17:33) also qualified for states.

Hamburg was 10th (327), Oley Valley 13th (339), Schuylkill Valley 14th (341) and Fleetwood 18th (387).

In girls AA racing action, Oley Valley’s Rebecca Snyder finished second to race-winning Northern freshman Marle Starliper, Snyder running an 18:44 to Starliper’s 18:27.

Conrad Weiser’s Maddy Frasch came in fourth in 20;07. Wyomissing, fourth in the team standings with 111 points, had a pair of state qualifiers in Monique Bristol (11th, 20:30) and alexandra Amin (12th, 20:36).

Oley Valley was seventh in the team standings (175), and Conrad Weiser 12th (278).

Class A

The Kutztown girls emerged as the district’s championsh­ip team in the small-school class, its top five runners all scoring Top 20 finishes.

The Cougars were headed by Maria Marmarlou’s seventhpla­ce (21:02) finish. Marmarou was followed by Robyn Hoch (10th, 21:37), Emma Workowski (11th, 21:42), Madison Keiser (15th, 22:08) and Madison Sheetz (18th, 22:38).

The Kutztown boys placed fourth in the eight-team field, keyed by the Top 20 finishes of Michael Hill (16th, 18:49), Sam Arnold (18th, 19:08), Matt Angstadt (19th, 19:09) and Derek Hanna (20th, 19:14).

Class AAA

The Wilson girls scored a pair of seconds in their bracket, individual­ly and as a team.

The Bulldogs’ Allison Willingmyr­e was second in a time of 18:35, just five seconds behind race-winner Abby Yourkavitc­h (18:20). Their second-place finish in the 34-team field put them among the four schools qualifying for states.

Wilson’s other top runners were Lindsay Sanger (22nd, 19:43) and Bryn Underwood (26th, 19:51). Gov. Mifflin’s top finisher was Andrea Miller, 11th in 19:30; Twin Valley was headed by Gina Mattera (47th, 20;38) and Liz Duplass (49th, 20;39); and Daniel Boone’s top runner was Lauren Reightneou­r (66th, 20:54).

Twin Valley was 12th in the boys standings (408), followed by Gov. Mifflin (13th, 437) and Daniel Boone (19th, 493).

In the boys’ race, Wilson’s Evan Royko was the highest-finishing Berks runner. Royko placed 14th in a time of 16:14 to rank among the top 34 finishers qualifying for states.

Gov. Miff lin’s Josiah Mansell (19th, 16:19), Wilson’s Jake Underwood (26th, 16:26) and Twin Val- ley’s Chase Knorr (31st, 16:33) were other state qualifier from Berks teams.

Daniel Boone’s Zach Murray (48th, 16:54) and Exeter’s Ricky Whitmoyer (49th, 16:55) headed their respective teams.

Wilson was the highest Berks team, their 190 points tying Cumberland Valley for fifth place. They were both two points behind Manheim Central, the fourth of four 3-AAAA teams making state qualificat­ion.

Other Berks teams’ standings in the 4-A bracket were Twin Valley (ninth, 269), Daniel Boone (14th, 445), Gov. Mifflin (18th, 495) and Exeter (22nd, 590).
