Torrence named to All-Region first team

Exeter grad caps superb Ursinus career with honor

Aliki Torrence continues to earn honors for her play with the Ursinus field hockey team.

The senior defender from Reading (Exeter Township) was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Associatio­n Division III South Regional first team on Nov. 29. It was her fourth straight NFHCA honor and third straight first-team selection. She was named to the Centennial Conference first team for the third straight year earlier in November.

Torrence started all 22 games and had four goals and four assists for 12 points. She also had a defensive save giving her nine for her career. She helped the Bears limit foes to just 24 goals with seven shutouts this season.

“Aliki had a phenomenal season to cap off a great field hockey career,” coach Janelle Benner said. “She was a tremendous defender who played with confidence and poise. Her presence on the field will be greatly missed next year.”

Ursinus finished 17-5 after going 9-1 in league play and captured the league tourney title with a 2-1 victory over Franklin & Marshall on Nov. 6. The Bears defeated Trinity, Conn. 2-1 in the first round of the Division III Tournament, but saw the season end with a 1-0 loss to Salisbury in the quarterfin­als.

GABRYELEPO­CHRON (EXETER), ANDREA WYSOCKI (BOYERTOWN) >>

Hendrix senior goalkeeper Gabryele Pochron (Exeter) was named to the Great Lakes Region second team. She was 3-12 and gave up 75 goals but her 250 saves were third in Division III and her total saves were fourth. It was her fourth straight second team selection and she finished her career with 1,031 career saves which is fourth best in Division III history.

Junior Andrea Wysocki (Boyertown) was named to the South Atlantic Region second team after she helped Alvernia post a 20-3 record this season. She was second on the team in points with 41 on 17 goals and seven assists and she had a team-high six gamewinner­s. She had scored just five goals with three assists for 13 points in 43 games her first two seasons with the Crusaders, who saw the season end with a 1-0 loss to Muhlenberg in the ECAC Division III quarterfin­als on Nov. 12.

SCOTTSCHAE­FFER (EXETER) >>

The true freshman kicked off his college career with the Muhlenberg wrestling team by going 4-1 at the Muhlenberg Duals on Nov. 19 in Allentown. Completing at heavyweigh­t, two of his victories came via a forfeit but he posted an 11-9 decision in a 47-6 victory over Temple and a technical fall in 6:49 in a 55-0 triumph over Southern Virginia. His only loss, a 7-4 decision, came against Wilkes which is ranked 17th in Division III and handed the Mules their only loss in the tourney (32-12).

MARCUS JOHNSON (GOVERNOR MIFFLIN) >>

The junior opened up the dual meet season by posting a pair of wins at 174 pounds to help the No. 25-ranked Appalachia­n State wrestling team score a pair of victories on No. 12 in Boone, N.C. Johnson recorded a pin (3:51) in a 50-0 victory over Belmont Abbey and a key 3-2 decision as the Mountainee­rs slipped past No. 15 Oregon State. He faced stiffer completion in his next two bouts, losing by technical fall in an 18-16 victory over No. 25 North Carolina on Nov. 27 and losing 10-2 in a 30-8 loss to No. 9 North Carolina State on Nov. 30.

LOGAN WINCHESTER (EXETER) >>

The junior helped the Bloomsburg swim team open the season with a 5-0 dual meet record. He took the 1,000 meter freestyle in a PSAC qualifying time of 10:14.02 in a 143-55 victory over Dickinson on Nov. 19. That bettered his time when he finished second to a teammate in the 1,000 freestyle in a 120-81 victory over Clarion on Nov. 12 when he was clocked in 10:17.00. He also finished second in the 1,650 meter freestyle with a PSAC qualifying time of 17:14.54 against Clarion.

ASHLEY HOFFMAN (TWIN VALLEY) >>

The sophomore was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Associatio­n Division I South Regional first team for her stellar play with the North Carolina field hockey team, which finished 20- 6 and was beaten 3-2 by Delaware in the NCAA title game. Hoffman finished third on the team with 28 points on nine goals and 10 assists. She also had a defensive save and helped the Tar Heels limit foes to 34 goals with six shutouts.

Connecticu­t red-shirt junior Nina Klein (Brandywine Heights) was named to the Mideast Region second team. The goalkeeper gave up 30 goals with 60 saves with six shutouts for the Huskies, who finished 22-2 and lost 2-1 in overtime to North Carolina in the NCAA semifinals.

ZACHARY STROHL (BOYERTOWN)>>

The senior was the top scorer to lead the Akron rifle team to the title in the six-day Zippy Open which started in early November and ended Nov. 21 in Akron, OH. Strohl was the top scorer in air rifle with a 589 total and was second in smallbore with a 577 total for 1,166 points in a field of 140 competitor­s. Akron totaled 4,613 to capture the title. The team returns to action in the Palmyra Invitation­al on Jan. 28-29 in nearby Palmyra.

LAURA SIMPSON (BOYERTOWN) >>

The sophomore is a key performer for the Simmons women’s swim team which kicked off its season with six straight dual meet victories. Simpson has 10 victories in the six meets including six individual wins. In a 187-74 victory over the University of New England on Nov. 19, she captured the 1,650 freestyle (18:44.72) and was a member of the winning 200 free relay (1:44.28). On Nov. 12 in a tight 140.5-138.5 victory over Wellesley, she won the 500 free (5:32.05), the 1000 free (11:28.30) and swam a leg on the winning 400 free relay (3:44.51).

BRANDI VALLELY (OLEY VALLEY) >>

The junior missed one game and played sparingly in two others but the 5-foot-7 guard played the way the Muhlenberg women’s basketball team and its fans are used to be seeing in a 74-64 Centennial Conference victory on Nov. 29 in Allentown. She played 36 minutes and had 16 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and three steals with just two turnovers as the Mules captured their fourth straight after a season-opening 58-50 loss to Moravian Nov. 15, a game that Vallely missed. She was an All-Centennial first team pick and an All-American honorable mention as a sophomore.

LUCAS MILLER (BOYERTOWN)>>

The true freshman competed in his first dual match for the Kutztown wrestling team and came away with a 4-3 victory at 133 pounds as the Golden Bears dropped a 29-11 decision to Pitt-Johnstown on Nov. 17 in Kutztown. Miller kicked off his college career by going 2-2 at 133 pounds at the 50th ESU Open on Nov. 6 in East Stroudsbur­g. He was a two-time state place winner while at Boyertown Area.

JEREMY GLASNER (BOYERTOWN) >>

The sophomore captured the 200 breaststro­ke in 2:26.52 to help the Washington & Jefferson men’s swim team turn back Pitt-Bradford 124-118 on Nov. 19. He also finished second in the 100 breast (1:06.05) and the 400 IM (4:38.08) and was on the 200 medley relay which finished second (1:42.04).

Junior Owen Hanna (Governor Mifflin) helped the Presidents by finishing second in the 50 free (23.45) and 200 free (1:54.36) and fourth in the 100 free (52.75). He also swam a leg on the winning 200 free relay (1:33.60).

ADAMMACKIE (BRANDYWINE HEIGHTS)>>

The senior is 8-2 at 184 pounds for the Lock Haven wrestling team. He finished second with a 2-1 record in the Mat-Town Open on Nov. 27 in Lock Haven. Mackie stepped up to 197 pounds and scored a 7-4 decision in a 24-16 loss to Virginia on Nov. 20 also in Lock Haven. With the victories, he moved over the .500 mark for his career and now stands at 41-38.

AMY FISTER (KUTZTOWN) >>

The senior wrapped up the fall season with the 13th ranked Memphis rifle team by leading the Tigers to a second place finish in the Gamecock Invitation­al Nov. 23 in Jacksonvil­le, Ala. Fister was the top finisher on her team in smallbore with a 584 score and was third in air rifle with a 585 score. Her total of 1,169 was sec- ond on the team, just one point behind the leader. Memphis will take a 13-8 record into the second half of the season in January. The Tigers defeated No. 7 Army, No. 11 Mississipp­i and 14th ranked Akron during the fall campaign.

CORNELL YARDE II (SCHUYLKILL VALLEY)>>

The Millersvil­le men’s basketball team opened the season with a 3-2 record and the 6-foot-4 forward had a big hand in all three victories. Yarde II had 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 79-71 victory over Edinboro on Nov. 19, had a career-high 22 points in a 69- 66 triumph over Mercyhurst on Nov. 20 and 13 points and nine rebounds in an 85-74 victory over Lincoln on Nov. 30. An injury limited his playing time last year but he still averaged 10.7 point a game. And, he played 29 games off the bench as a red-shirt freshman the year before.

KRISTEN KELLER (SCHUYLKILL VALLEY) >>

The 5-foot-11 junior righthande­r is a member of the Felician women’s bowling team, the Golden Falcons wrapping up the fall season with a 16-16 record. The team reached .500 after winning all three matches on the final day to finish fifth out of 13 teams in the Virginia Union Invitation­al on Nov. 6 in Midlothian, Va. Keller averaged 168.67 for the three traditiona­l games she competed in at Virginia Union.
