Exeter grad Kramer starring for Ursinus

- By Bill Arsenault

Alex Kramer has competed in three tournaments for the Ursinus wrestling team thus far and he’s won two of them. And, in the one tourney that he lost, he was beaten in the finals by the No. 1 wrestler in the country in his weight class.

Kramer, an Exeter Township grad, captured the 149 pound title at the Petrofes Invitational in Grantham on Dec. 3. He defeated Kyle Ferguson of Mount Union 5-0 in the title match. Ferguson had dropped just four points in his first four matches.

On Nov. 12, he captured the title at the Ursinus Fall Brawl in Collegeville, going 5-0 and winning the title with a 3-1 victory over Jack Stanton-- Taddeo of Navy Prep School.

Kramer kicked off the season by losing the title match at the Messiah Invitational in Grantham 5-0 to Lycoming’s Seth Lansberry. In the first two rounds, he had beaten a pair of wrestlers who entered the tourney with a combined 35-1 record. He leads the Bears with a 15-2 record and is ranked 10th in Division III in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

“Alex is 15 away from one hundred career victories which is a very hard thing to do,” coach Bill Racich said. “My staff and I totally expect him to compete for a national title in March after he wins the East Region Championships.”

The coach said he could talk all day about his wrestler.

“Alex is a perfect student-athlete and one heck of a wrestler,” Racich said. “And, he’s a team captain, a three-time NCAA Scholar All-American and lead singer in the college Baritones group.”
