Mustangs off to 4-1 start

The Gov. Mifflin girls basketball team opened the season 4-0 before taking its first loss of the season on Saturday to Boyertown.

The Mustangs scored non-league victories over Garden Spot (41-25) and Lebanon (73-33) before a 51-34 defeat to the Bears.

Jen Martin (17) and Ta’Shonna Wright-Gaskins (15) combined for 32 points in topping Garden Spot, overcoming a lackluster first half by holding the Spartans to only eight second half points.

The Mustangs dominated Lebanon, bursting out to a 20-0 firstquart­er lead. Martin had 24 and Wright-Gaskins 23.

Against Boyertown, the Bears led 20-13 at halftime and pulled away in a 14-5 third period. Martin scored 11, Wright-Gaskins added 10 and Kyra Hartman had seven, which was offset by Abby Kapp’s 21 points and 15 rebounds.

DANIEL BOONE >> The Blazers went 2-1 last week and sit 3-2 overall after wins over Brandywine Heights (4622 on Dec. 13) and Manheim Central (43-34 on Dec. 17), offset by a 44-39 defeat to Daniel Boone on Dec. 14.

Sydney Hayes had a game-high 15 and Julia Bookwalter added 13 in the win over the Bullets.

Madison Spitko netted a teamhigh 12 in the loss to PJP.

The Barons were bested by Bookwalter’s 12, Spitko’s 10 while Emily Scott scored eight points.

EXETER>> The Eagles are 2-2 in nonleague play, last week defeating Antietam 52-34 on Dec. 13 before falling to Warwick 48-32 on Dec. 17.

Exeter led 29-12 at the half vs. Antietam and extended the lead in the third when Sammi Snyder scored the bulk of her 14 points. Jordan Davis and Chelsea Rousseau had 10 apiece.

The Eagles closed the gap late against the Warriors but couldn’t overcome a 20-0 first-quarter deficit. Davis’ 13 points were best for Exeter.
