Boys Basketball

Berks Catholic placed third in the District 3 Class 4A championsh­ips after a narrow 44-43 loss to Middletown on Feb. 27 before rallying with a 52-36 win over Bishop McDevitt in the thirdplace game on March 1.

The No. 1 seed Saints (21-7) were done in by Ryan Hughes’ shot at the buzzer of the semifinals at Garden Spot High School.

Luis Garcia, who led BC with 14 points, had given the Saints the lead with under three seconds left.

Bryce Calloway added nine and Tre Dabney nine in the defeat.

In the third-place game, Dabney netted 12 and Keba Mitchell had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Girls Basketball

Berks Catholic placed fifth in District 3 Class 4A following a 54-25 win over York Suburban on March 2.

Dejah Terrell had 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead the No. 8 Saints (17-12) over the No. 6 Trojans in the fifth-place game.

The Saints qualified for the PIAA tournament on Feb. 28 by ensuring a spot among the top 6 by way of a 49-39 victory over Eastern York.

Berks Catholic entered playbacks after a 41-38 loss in the second round to No. 1 seed Northern Lebanon.

In the fifth place game, Terrell’s 28 points were her second-high- est output of the year and ninth time over 20.

Meghan Leininger scored nine points for the Saints, who will meet the District 12 champion in the first round of states on March 10.

In the consolatio­n win over Eastern York, Abigail Gaffney’s 13 points led the Saints, followed by double-figure scorers Terrell (11), Taylor Blunt (11) and Taylor Keys (10). *** Twin Valley finished fourth in Class 5A after reaching the semifinals of the tournament.

The No. 6 Raiders reached the Final Four with a 50-46 win over No. 11 Palmyra on Feb. 21 and a 54-46 win over No. 3 New Oxford on Feb. 24.

In the semifinals, Twin Valley fell to No. 2 Susquehann­ock, 4825, on Feb. 28; it then settled for fourth by way of a 50-19 defeat to Lower Dauphin on March 2.

The Raiders meet District 2’s No. 2 seed in the 5A first round on Saturday, March 11.
