Exeter holds off Hempfield

Eagles’ rushing attack carries team to 2-0 start

EXETER 27, HEMPFIELD 20 » The Eagles defense made a crucial stop on 4th down deep in their territory with 20 seconds to play to preserve a non-league victory over Hempfield to improve to 2-0 on Sept. 8.

The game featured major rushing attacks headlined by Exeter quarterbac­k Brandon Unterkoelf­er, who rushed for 227 yards and two touchdowns, and running back Nick Sarangouli­s, who rushed for 137 yards on 18 attempts and scored two touchdowns. Sarangouli­s’ 4-yard TD run in the fourth quarter punctuated the Eagles’ rally from 20-13 down entering the fourth quarter.

Quarterbac­k Unterkoefl­er tied the game 20-20 on a 37-yard touchdown run earlier in the final frame.

Exeter totaled 389 yards rushing while Hempfield had 349, led by QB Mark Himmelsbac­h’s 173 and 2 TDs.

Exeter hosts Spring-Ford (1-2) of the Pioneer Athletic Conference this Friday with its sights set on 3-0 before entering the Berks Football League portion of its season.

COCALICO 42, GOV. MIFFLIN 21 »The Mustangs couldn’t stifle the Cocalico rushing attack as the Eagles running back Brandon Brubaker found the end zone four times in a non-league victory.

It was Gov. Mifflin’s first defeat after knocking off Wilson in Week 2.

The game was tight through the first half with Mifflin QB Kam Wolfe finding Tyshaun Weaver on an 8-yard TD reception to tie it 14-14. Cocalico took a 21-14 lead into halftime on a 4-yard TD run by Ronald Zahm.

Cocalico went up 28-14 on the first possession of the third quarter on a Brubaker 43-yard run. He totaled 151 yards on 13 rushes. Wolfe and Bryce Stubler connected on for an 82-yard TD catch but it would be the last time Gov. Mifflin would light the scoreboard.

For the game, Wolfe was 10-for-18 for 181 yards with two touchdowns and one intercepti­on. The Mustangs’ ground game was held in check with Isaac Ruoss’ 37 yards (nine carries) a team-high.

The Mustangs’ Michael Franks blocked a field-goal attempt in the second half.

Gov. Mifflin visits Manheim Township on Sept. 15.

RED LION 35, DANIEL BOONE 14 » It was a long night on the gridiron for Daniel Boone as the Blazers struggled to get any kind of offense going in their non-conference game against Red Lion. On his first carry Red Lion’s Zach Crossland ran 55 yards to put them up 7-0 and on the ensuing Blazers possession it was Crossland picking off QB Josh Ehst for a 36-yard touchdown.

The Blazers finally got on the board when Ehst con-

nected with Chase Lacey for a 9-yard touchdown but Red Lion answered with another long touchdown to go up 28-7. Ehst finished his night with a late touchdown pass to Dylan Walker and totaled 11-for-23 for 201 yards with two TDs and one intercepti­on.

Lacey had five catches for 110 yards and Walker had four receptions for 77 yards.

Daniel Boone travels to Northern Lebanon on Sept. 15.
