State semis unkind to Berks squads
BCIAA and District 3 Class A champion Oley Valley had a 24-game winning streak snapped in a PIAA semifinal defeat to Wyoming Seminary, 2-0, on Nov. 14, costing the Lynx a spot in the state final.
The Lynx (24-2) repeated as district champion after Sydney Gillingham scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Newport in the final on Nov. 4. In the first round of states, Oley thumped Lower Moreland 6-0 while getting three goals from Sophia Gladieux and single tallies from Brynn Gilbert, Gillingham and Madison Kline. In the quarterfinals, Kline and Gladieux each scored twice in a 5-1 win over Bermudian Springs. Hannah Beers added a goal and an assist.
*** Highly-rated Villa Maria scored two goals in the first six minutes and went on to defeat Twin Valley 5-0 in a PIAA Class 2A field hockey semifinal game at Exeter on Nov. 14.
Emily Doyle had a goal and two assists to help Villa Maria advance to the 2A championship game at Whitehall on Nov. 18. District 3 runner-up Twin Valley ended the season 19-8. The Raiders won a pair of state games after falling 5-2 in the District 3 final to Donegal. TV topped Crestwood 5-1 in the first round thanks to two goals from Erica Wolfgang and a goal and an assist each from Grace Hiddemen and Ashlynn Lennon. In a quarterfinal win over Southern Lehigh, 1-0 in overtime, Riley Knapp won it for the Raiders.
Boys Soccer
District 3 Class 2A runner-up Oley Valley suffered a season-ending defeat to District 7’s Quaker Valley, 2-0 in the PIAA semifinals on Nov. 14.
Oley (17-7) got a hat trick from Joshua Daniels on a 4-1 win over Wyomissing in the district semifinals before being blanked by state finalist Lancaster Mennonite 3-0 in the final on Nov. 4.
In the first round of states, Oley routed West Shamokin 6-0. Jaegar Frangakis and John Pierdomenico scored twice and Daniels had three assists. Daniels scored the lone goal in the second half of a 1-0 win over Shady Side Academy in the quarterfinals. Austin Himes and Nicholas Repko combined for a three-save shutout.
