Santos stars for Charleston

- By Bill Arsenault

Ryan Santos is in his final season playing with the Charleston men’s volleyball team and he and the Golden Eagles are off to a fast start at 6-1 overall and 2-0 in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play after defeating Princeton of the Ivy League 3-2 and 3-0 to kick off the EIWA season Feb. 9 and Feb. 10 in Charleston, W Va.

The 6-foot-6 outside hitter from Reading (Exeter Township) is second on the team in kills with 55 and points scored with 72.0. He leads in service aces with 11 and has 33 digs and 12 total blocks. He had 17 kills, seven digs, six service aces and four total blocks in the sweep of the Tigers.

“What we love about Ryan is that he is a leader on and off the court,” coach Dr. Bren Stevens said. “Ryan brings an incredible work ethic and sense of maturity to every practice. He is one of the strongest athletes on our team and his ability to make tough shots during pressure moments has been most helpful as we continue to grow as a program.”

Santos is one of the players who helped start the program when he was a freshman and led them through the growing pains.

“I think it says something special about Ryan because it was evident that the wins would take some time to come,” Stevens said. “Yet, he was willing to step up to that challenge and from my perspective he has become a force on the court.” BEN MAACK (GOVERNOR MIFFLIN) » The Ursinus freshman finished fourth at 184 pounds at the Centennial Conference Wrestling Championships on Feb. 10 in Lexington, Va. Maack made it to the semifinals before losing 2-0 on riding time. He won a consolation match before losing the third-place bout 7-3. He’s 23-9 on the season with 10 pins, three major decisions and one technical fall. He has a team-high 89 points scored and prepped for the league meet by going 2-0 with a 7-0 decision and a pin in 42 seconds at the McDaniel Duals Feb. 3 in Westminster, Md.

KENZIE MYER (DANIEL BOONE) » The freshman wrapped up her first regular season with the Arcadia women’s swim team in a 184-71 Middle Atlantic Conference dual meet victory over Stevenson on Jan. 27 in Glenside. Myer finished third in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.69 and swam legs on the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay C squads, both finishing fourth. The Knights finished 11-1 overall and 9-0 in MAC meets and will be tough to beat in the league championships Feb. 15-18 in York.

ADAM MYERS (DANIEL BOONE) » The Ursinus senior is ranked second in the shot put on the Centennial Conference performance list with a toss of 49 feet, 3 inches. He reached that distance when he finished second in the season-opening Diplomat Open on Dec. 2 in Lancaster. Myers finished fifth with a toss of 46 feet, ¾ inches at the Frank Colden Invitational on Feb. 3 in Collegeville. The league championship is set for Feb. 24-25 in Collegeville. Myers finished second in the shot at last year’s indoor league meet with a personal best toss of 49 feet, 4 ½ inches.
