Reading, Kutztown, Berks Christian earn No. 1 seeds

Boys basketball

Three Berks County boys basketball teams earned No. 1 seeds for the upcoming District 3 boys basketball playoffs. Reigning PIAA champion Reading sits atop the district power rankings in Class 6A, Kutztown is No. 1 in Class 3A and Berks Christian tops 1A.

Other Berks entrants included Wilson (6A), Exeter (5A), Conrad Weiser (5A), Berks Catholic (4A), Antietam (2A) and High Point Baptist (1A).

Seeds are according to the final power rankings, which were released Sunday. Brackets were to be finalized Monday.

The Red Knights’ quest for a repeat begins Feb. 23 against the winner of No. 8 Central York and No. 9 Dallastown.

In Class 5A, No. 11 Exeter plays at No. 6 Hershey on Feb. 19.

In Class 4A, No. 2 Berks Catholic receives an opening-round bye and meets No. 7 Northern Lebanon or No. 10 Elco on Feb. 22.

Kutztown, which missed last year’s tournament, earned a first-round bye in the six-team bracket and earns an automatic bid to the PIAA tournament (4 teams qualify from 3A). The Cougars face the winner of No. 4 Lancaster Mennonite and No. 5 York Catholic at home Feb. 22.

Berks Christian earned a first-round bye. On Feb. 22 in the quarterfin­als, they are slated to meet No. 8 Lancaster County Christian or No. 9 Harrisburg Christian.

Girls basketball

Six Berks teams – Gov. Mifflin and Wilson in Class 6A; Twin Valley and Fleetwood in Class 5A; and Berks Catholic and Wyomissing in Class 4A – qualified for the upcoming District 3 tournament­s.

Seeds are according to the final power rankings, which were released Sunday. Brackets were to be finalized Monday.

Gov. Mifflin and Wilson, which faced off the BCIAA quarters Saturday, were Nos. 7 and 8, respective­ly in 6A. On Feb. 19, the Mustangs were to host No. 10 Penn Manor while the Bulldogs would face No. 9 Cedar Crest.

In the 16-team Class 5A field, Twin Valley is No. 3 and Fleetwood No. 9.

On Feb. 20, the Raiders will host No. 14 Big Spring in the first round. The Tigers will travel to No. 8 Palmyra.

Berks Catholic is No. 2 and Wyomissing No. 3 in the 10-team 4A field.
