Closing reception announced for ‘Susan Biebuyck & Friends’ at Alvernia

- From Emily A. Branch

Aclosing reception for “Susan Biebuyck & Friends” is scheduled for Feb. 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. The Miller Gallery is located in the main lobby of historic Francis Hall on Alvernia’s Main Campus, 400 Saint Bernadine St., Reading.

Invited to showcase her new work in a solo exhibit, Biebuyck, who serves as gallery director and curator for Studio B Fine Art Gallery in Boyertown instead invited the “treasure trove of artist friends” who inspire her to exhibit with her, explaining, “I am truly delighted to have my friends exhibiting with me. I really enjoy the family of artists in this community who offer not only support but generate a kinship of creativity.”

Invited Artists: Suzanne Fellows is a GoggleWorks artist and professor of art at Reading Area Community College. Biebuyck says, “I regularly entertain thoughts with Suzanne Fellows who has a delicate sense of the world. She recently used her work to save elephants in Africa with the “99 Elephants a Day” project. This year she’s moved on to creatures with which she shares her garden.”

Kristen Woodward is a professor of art at Albright College and board member of the Humane Society of Berks County. Woodward’s work is exhibited across the United States and abroad and offers Biebuyck constant lessons in art history and current trends including commentary on guns and violence and encouraging compassion towards all of humanity and animals.

Biebuyck recognized the talents of Angela Faust Izzo in a watercolor class at Kutztown University over 20 years ago. Several years ago when Izzo brought work to enter an exhibit at Studio B, they re-established their friendship, recognizing a similar love of humor that Izzo features in her work. Izzo, a wife and mother of four children, is employed by Gateway Ticketing and teaches watercolor and oil painting classes at Studio B.

Over several years Biebuyck has watched the blossoming talents of Devon Stackonis, a senior art student at Kutztown University. Stackonis exhibits regularly at Studio B and showcases multiple talents in art, music, and dance. Biebuyck sees her younger energy in Stackonis as an emerging artist already receiving glowing reviews for her work in painting and printmaking. About Biebuyck: Biebuyck’s own work for the exhibit centers on two new ideas. She has been painting on recycled food containers as a nod to environmental awareness while borrowing the rich color and shapes that intensify her work. An ice cream cone painted on a Cheetos box exemplifies this approach.

Susan offers her second genre of work as a serious group of paintings. Mostly oil on aluminum, these pieces highlight our cultural relationship with art. She uses appropriation and gives a nod to some of her favorite modern artists.

Bieubyck was an inaugural GoggleWorks studio artist from 2005-2012. Her work has traveled to 11 countries. She has attended and exhibited in the 2013 Amsterdam Fringe Festival and the 2014 New Zealand Fringe Festival. She curates and exhibits annually since 2010 in the Twin Cities cultural exchange between Reading, Pa. and Reutlingen, Germany.
