Police find pair passed out in car with drugs, child
AMITY » Two people were arrested after police say they found them passed out in a running car with drugs and a gun in the front seats and a child in the back.
Akil Headen, 31, and Kirsten Back, 26, both of Pottstown, have been charged after police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at an intersection in Amity Township.
According to police, officers were called to the intersection of Briarwood Drive at Nicholson Avenue at 1:01 a.m. on Sunday Feb. 11 on the report that a running vehicle was stopped in the intersection. When police arrived, responding officers found a black Kia Soul stopped in the intersection with three sleeping occupants. The vehicle was running and in drive with the driver’s foot on the brake, police said.
A sleeping 6-year-old girl was in the back seat.
Police were eventually able to identify the front occupants as Headen and Back. Headen was found to be in possession of a firearm, methamphetamine, oxycodone, alprazolam, and drug paraphernalia, police allege. Back was found to be in possession of marijuana, alprazolam, and drug paraphernalia.
Headen and Back were taken into custody and the child was placed in the custody of a family member, police said.
Headen is facing charges of firearms not to be carried without a license, recklessly endangering another person, DUI, intent to possess a controlled substance, public drunkenness, use or possession of drug paraphernalia and careless driving. Back has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, possession of marijuana, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, intent to possess a controlled substance and public drunkenness, according to court documents.
Both were arraigned on Feb. 11 before District Judge Gail M. Greth and are scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 28 before District Judge Steven Chieffo. Headen was unable to post the set $30,000 cash bail and is being held at Berks County Prison. Back was released on $5,000 unsecured bail.
