Police find pair passed out in car with drugs, child

AMITY » Two people were arrested after police say they found them passed out in a running car with drugs and a gun in the front seats and a child in the back.

Akil Headen, 31, and Kirsten Back, 26, both of Pottstown, have been charged after police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at an intersecti­on in Amity Township.

According to police, officers were called to the intersecti­on of Briarwood Drive at Nicholson Avenue at 1:01 a.m. on Sunday Feb. 11 on the report that a running vehicle was stopped in the intersecti­on. When police arrived, responding officers found a black Kia Soul stopped in the intersecti­on with three sleeping occupants. The vehicle was running and in drive with the driver’s foot on the brake, police said.

A sleeping 6-year-old girl was in the back seat.

Police were eventually able to identify the front occupants as Headen and Back. Headen was found to be in possession of a firearm, methamphet­amine, oxycodone, alprazolam, and drug parapherna­lia, police allege. Back was found to be in possession of marijuana, alprazolam, and drug parapherna­lia.

Headen and Back were taken into custody and the child was placed in the custody of a family member, police said.

Headen is facing charges of firearms not to be carried without a license, recklessly endangerin­g another person, DUI, intent to possess a controlled substance, public drunkennes­s, use or possession of drug parapherna­lia and careless driving. Back has been charged with endangerin­g the welfare of a child, possession of marijuana, use or possession of drug parapherna­lia, intent to possess a controlled substance and public drunkennes­s, according to court documents.

Both were arraigned on Feb. 11 before District Judge Gail M. Greth and are scheduled for a preliminar­y hearing on Feb. 28 before District Judge Steven Chieffo. Headen was unable to post the set $30,000 cash bail and is being held at Berks County Prison. Back was released on $5,000 unsecured bail.
