Karas scores silver
Exeter’s Dennis Karas was the silver medalist at 220 pounds at the District 3 Class 3A Wrestling Championships last Saturday at Giant Center in Hershey.
Muhlenberg’s Stefahn Mayo was also runner-up, finishing second at 152 following a 11-7 defeat to Lower Dauphin’s Clayton Ulrey.
Karas fell to Shippensburg’s Cole Forrester 9-4. They were Berks counties’ only finalists.
Twin Valley’s CJ Morton earned another trip to the state tournament by placing fourth at 120, falling to Cocalico’s Josiah Gehr, 11-5 in the thirdplace match.
Gov. Mifflin heavyweight Jordan Espinosa qualified for states and finished fourth at 285 after an 11-4 loss to Warwick’s Ryan Stewart in the medal match.
Finishers in the top 4 qualified for the PIAA Championships.
In fifth-place matches, Gov. Mifflin’s Jalon Lavine majored Josh Miller of Central Dauphin 14-5 at 106; Wilson’s Kolbe Eidle topped Exeter’s Gage Moran 10-6 at 152; Exeter’s Matt Ward edged West Perry’s Caden Morrison, 8-5 at 160; Exeter’s Michael Crane fell to West Perry’s Jake Quaker.
Class AA
Hamburg’s Reese Mason claimed the 182-pound championship at the District 3 Class 2A Championships to lead the Berks County contingent last weekend at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Mason, a senior, defeated Camp Hill’s Luca Colestock, 9-3, to go atop the podium. He upped his season record to 35-2.
Brandywine Heights’ Dalton Gimbor was the runner-up at 113 following a 7-6 loss to Bishop McDevitt’s Nate Smith. Brother Bailey Gimbor placed third at 106, capped by a 4-2 suddenvictory win over Middletown’s Luke Fegley in the medal match.
Schuylkill Valley’s Jack Bennett placed third at 145, the senior going 3-1 for the tournament. He pinned Newport’s Mike Capozzoli in 2:30 in his medal match.
Kutztown junior Tyler Fisher took fourth at 170, going 2-2 for the tournament. The junior who missed the early part of the season with a knee injury fell is his medal match to Littlestown’s Carl Harris 7-3. Teammate Nate Raudenbush went 3-3 at 285 and placed sixth.
Top-seven finishers qualified for next weekend’s Southeast AA Regional at Wilson.
Also advancing for Hamburg were: Kyle Vernon (sixth place at 120), Shane Strausser (sixth place at 126) and Ben Weidenhammer (seventh place at 195).
Boiling Springs, with two champions and two runners-up, won the team title with 169, over Northern Lebanon (145) and Bishop McDevitt. Hamburg was 13th (49) and Brandywine Heights was 17th (41.5).
