Exeter cheer team claims national title
The Exeter varsity cheer team became national champions earlier this month at the National High School Cheerleading Championship.
Exeter won the medium varsity non-tumbling division at the competition held Feb. 7-8 in Orlando, Fla., which featured more than 50 teams from around the country.
The team has competed in the national competition nine years with this their first championship. Exeter was the top team in both rounds of competition, scoring a 34.6 out of 35 in the cheer portion.
Exeter went on to win the BCIAA championship on Feb. 17 as the Division I and overall champion.
Bowling
Daniel Boone freshman Alex Horton and Gov. Mifflin freshman Emily Breidegam won the boys and girls titles at the District 3 bowling championships at Berks Lanes on Feb. 24.
Horton defeated Conrad Weiser’s Danny Althouse 213-160 in the championship match.
On Feb. 23, Horton led Daniel Boone to the Berks team championship. The Blazers topped Wilson 3,283-3,127. Horton bowled a 789 series, the highest in BCIAA postseason history. He rolled a 290 in his opening game. Muhlenberg won the Berks girls’ team title.
Breidegam edged teammate Emily Garl 213-197 in the championship match.
Boys Basketball
BERKS CATHOLIC 52, NORTHERN LEBANON 34 » Berks Catholic recorded its 20th straight win with a 52-34 victory over Northern Lebanon in a District 3 Class 4A quarterfinal on Feb. 22.
An 18-0 run between the second and third quarters triggered the Saints (24-2) into control after a slow start.
Casey Jack scored 17 points and had eight rebounds and Luis Garcia scored 14 points for the Saints. Keba Mitchell added 13 points, seven rebounds
Berks Catholic faced No. 3 Middletown in a district semifinal on Monday.
Girls Basketball
PENN MANOR 55, GOV. MIFFLIN 45 » The No. 7 Mustangs suffered a season-ending defeat to No. 10 Penn Manor in a District 3 Class 6A first round game on Feb. 19.
Kyra Hartman scored 22 points and Ta’Shonna Wright-Gaskins had 12 to lead Mifflin.
The Mustangs went cold in the second half as the Comets and Macy Carroll (17 points) rallied from 13 down.
The BCIAA finalists went 17-9 on the season.
BERKS CATHOLIC 31, YORK SUBURBAN 27 » The Saints got nine second-half points from Molly Duncan in a grind-it-out District 3-4A quarterfinal win. The No. 2 seeded and Berks champion Saints (20-4) got 11 points and 13 rebounds from Dejah Terrell.
BC and No. 3 Wyomissing met in the semifinals on Feb. 26.
