Boone volleyball off to solid start

The Daniel Boone boys volleyball got its 2018 season off to a good start last week by scoring a pair of victories over Berks Conference opponents.

The Blazers edged Berks Catholic March 26, 3-2, then followed March 27 with a 3-0 sweep of Fleetwood. Against the Saints, Boone won the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-22; and after BC took the next two 2624 and 29-27, Boone took the deciding fifth set 15-8. In the Fleetwood match, it handled the Tigers by set scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-21.

Against BC, Scott Schilling had 14 kills and four blocks for the Blazers, Sean Zamichieli had 13 kills, Luke Degenhart had 32 digs and Colin Gabbett had six kills and five aces for Boone.

In the match with the Tigers, Colin Gabbett had nine kills and four aces, Colin O’Toole had 26 assists and five digs and Scott Schilling had seven kills and eight blocks for the Blazers (1-0, 2-0).

Baseball

WHITEHALL 10, DANIEL BOONE 9 » At Birdsboro March 31, the Zephyrs scored two runs on a dropped fly ball in the top of the seventh inning to pull ahead of the Blazers for victory in a backand-forth rematch of their first-round PIAA playoff game last year.

For the game, Whitehall scored a total of seven runs on Boone’s misplayed fly balls.

For the Blazers Connor Cleaver had two hits and and RBI, Brett Goodrich had two hits, and Josh Picarreta and Carson Zuber doubled. For Whitehall, Matthew Zeminsky was 2-for-3 with double and three RBI and Robert Lamm had a triple.

Boys lacrosse

SOUTHERN LEHIGH 14, DANIEL BOONE 5 » At Reiffton March 27, Jason Metz scored three goals and Connor Powell stopped 13 shots for the Eagles as they fell to the Spartans.

Girls lacrosse

POTTSGROVE 18, DANIEL BOONE 2 » At Birdsboro March 29, Emily Williams had five goals and three assists, Brooke Saylor had four goals and two assists and Allie Reppert had three goals and two assists to lead the Falcons (2-2) over the Blazers.

Felicity Norris and Sydney Pajakinas scored for Daniel Boone in its season opener.

Softball

DANIEL BOONE 13, POTTSVILLE 0 » At Pottsville March 31, the Blazers racked up 15 hits and 11 RBI on the way to a nonconfere­nce win over the Tide.

Caitlin McCrone (two RBI) and Savannah Weller (double, two RBI) each finished with home runs while Elizabeth Nitka had a pair of hits and knocked in three runs. Heather Hall picked up the win in the circle, holding Pottsville hitless through the first three innings before handing it over to Taylor Henderson and McCrone in relief.

Boys tennis

MUHLENBERG 5, DANIEL BOONE 2 » At Laureldale March 26, Griffin Adams figured in on both points the Blazers scored in their Berks Conference loss to the Muhls.

Adams won over Hugo Ramos, 6-1, 7-5 at first singles. He then teamed up with Cole Reinert for a 10-8 verdict over Muhlenberg’s Ramos/Sebastian Ponce pairing at first doubles.

Boys track

WILSON 83, DANIEL BOONE 58» At Wilson March 27, Brady Ferguson, Ben Hoffmanner and Zach Murray had the Blazers’ lone individual firsts in a loss to the Bulldogs.

Ferguson won the pole vault by clearing the bar at nine feet, Hoffmanner took the 800 in 2:09.1 and Murray headed the 3,200 in 10:27.5. Hoffmanner and Murray also ran legs on the Blazers’ winning 4x800 relay, teaming with Max Stefanelli and Luke Cable to run an 8:48.

Girls track

WILSON 107, DANIEL BOONE 41» At Birdsboro March 27, Skyler Emory was a two-race winner for the Blazers in their loss to the Bulldogs.

Emory took the 100 in 13.30 and the 400 in 1:06.6. Other winning Boone competitor­s were Emily Lodge in the triple jump (31-10 ½) and Emily Wedemeyer in the discus (90-7). Lodge also ran the anchor leg of the Blazers’ winning 4x100, which clocked a 54.3.

EXETER Baseball

GARDEN SPOT 6, EXETER 5 » At New Holland March 28, Alex Barlow was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and two runs scored as the Eagles fell to the Spartans to open their season.
