Gov. Mifflin baseball wins wild BCIAA quarterfin­al; Exeter girls lacrosse falls in county championsh­ip

The No. 5 seeded Gov. Mifflin baseball team won a wild Berks League quarterfin­al over Wilson, 8-7, on May 10.

The Mustangs used five walks, two singles and a dropped flyball to score six runs in the seventh inning and beat the fourth-seeded Bulldogs.

Kolbie Reeser pitched three shutout innings, allowing a single and a walk, to pick up the win. Ben Myers and Joe Adametz had RBI singles in the seventh for Mifflin and Trevor Woolwine went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Gov. Mifflin was joined in the semifinals by Fleetwood (3-1 winner over Oley Valley in 12 innings), Muhlenberg (4-1 win over Kutztown) and Twin Valley (9-6 winner over Berks Catholic). The Mustangs were due to meet top seeded Muhlenberg in the semifinals on May 15 at First Energy Stadium at approximat­ely 8 p.m. READING HIGH 7, GOV. MIFFLIN5» At Shillingto­n May 7, Emanuel Morales went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to help the Red Knights defeat the Mustangs. Ben Myers doubled as part of his two-hit outing for Mifflin.

WILSON 4, DANIEL BOONE 2 » At West Lawn May 7, the Bulldogs took advantage of a single, two errors and a walk in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead and held on to beat the Blazers in Berks Conference action.

Mike Gregos went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Carson Zuber was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Daniel Boone. DONEGAL 4, DANIEL BOONE 1 » At Birdsboro May 8, Kyle Hess led off the game with a home run and the Indians went on to defeat the Blazers.

For Boone, Carson Zuber, Connor Cleaver, and Brett Goodrich each had two hits and Tim Richard had an RBI. MUHLENBERG 13, EXETER 1 » At Reiffton May 7, Tyler McGonigle went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored, Jake Kuczawa was 2-for-2 with three runs and Taylor Kauffman 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Muhls to a four-inning win over the Eagles.

Colin Gehringer went 1-for-2 with a run scored for Exeter.

EXETER 9, COCALICO 7 » On May 8, Colin Gehringer went 2-for-3 with three RBI to key the Eagles’ nonleague victory over Cocalico.

Other big hitters for Exeter were Nate Serba, 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored; Christian Pochron, 2-for-4 with two runs scored; and Trey Paige, 2-for-3.

EXETER 4, CONRAD WEISER 0 » Christian Pochron threw a complete game one-hitter with seven strikeouts in leading the Eagles past the Scouts in Berks Conference play,

At the plate for Exeter, Trey Paige went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Asa Wilson went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Zach Fylypowycz and Brett Leister both went 2-for-3. LANCASTER MCCASKEY 4, EXETER 3 » On May 11, Ben McGovern went 2-for-3 with an RBI double to head the Eagles in their non-league loss to the Red Tornado.

Liam Goletz threw 5 1/3 innings for Exeter, allowing no earned runs and striking out five.

Girls lacrosse

The Exeter girls lacrosse team settled for silver in the BCIAA championsh­ip, falling to Wilson 9-8 in overtime on May 10.

Julia Strobel scored the game-winner for the Bulldogs after the teams matched each other with four-goal halves to go into OT. Strobel had three goals and an assist while Sara DeLeon netted twice for Wilson. Kylee Hubiak led Exeter (15-4) with four goals.

WILSON 19, GOV. MIFFLIN 9 » At Reifton May 10, the Bulldogs (18-1) outscored the Mustangs 12-1 in the second half to win their BCIAA semifinal.

Lindsey Strohl scored five goals to head Mifflin (11-8)

DISTRICT 3 PLAYOFFS » Exeter and Gov. Mifflin qualified for the District 3-3A playoffs. The Eagles earned the No. 3 seed to earn a first-round bye. They will host the winner of Carlisle/ Central York on Thursday, 7 p.m. No,. 7 Gov. Mifflin hosts No. 10 New Oxford in the first round Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Boys lacrosse

DISTRICT 3 PLAYOFFS » Gov. Mifflin, Exeter and Wilson qualified for the District 3-3A playoffs. The No. 8 Mustangs (12-5) host No. 9 Penn Manor (12-5) on Tuesday, 7 p.m. Exeter (810) is the No. 12 seed and visits No. 5 Hempfield (143), also Tuesday at 7 p.m. The BCIAA champions Wilson (16-2) earned the No. 3 seed and await the winner of Dallastown and Central Dauphin.

Sydney Hayes, Dani Hayes, Caitlin McCrone and Hailey Kaba each hit a home run for Daniel Boone. DANIEL BOONE 9, HEMPFIELD 2» At Birdsboro May 9, Elizabeth Nitka had three hits and Sydney Hayes drove in three runs on three hits to lead the Blazers past the Black Knights. EXETER 1, HAMBURG 0 » At Hamburg May 8, Karysa Karas scored the game’s lone run as the Eagles edged the Hawks in Berks Conference play.;

Karas walked to lead off the fourth inning, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, then scored on Jordan Denunzio’s single to center field.

GOV. MIFFLIN 6, READING HIGH 0 » Kendall Shank and Eliana Litwin combined for the shutout to lead the Mustangs past the Red Knights. Shank went 3-for-3 with two RBI; Ellie Denlinger went 2-for4; and Kim Speece went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Mifflin.

GOV. MIFFLIN 3, DANIEL BOONE 0 » On May 12, the Mustangs swept the Blazers in their BCIAA semifinal. Set scores were 25-20, 25-22 and 25-11.

Jonas Conner had 12 kills and three blocks for Mifflin, whose other stars were Casey Klahr (eight kills and seven digs), Kam Wolfe (five kills and seven digs), Mel Etienne (five kills and two blocks), Ryan Lawes (29 assists) and Brandon Allen (two blocks, two digs and two kills). For Boone, Sean Zamichieli had seven kills; Colin Gabbett had six kills and four digs; and Colin O’Toole had 24 assists and four digs.

EXETER 3, BERKS CATHOLIC 0» The Eagles swept their BCIAA semifinal with the Saints 25-13, 25-21, 25-14 on May 12. Reese Ganter had 32 assists, two kills, a block and four aces as the Eagles (13-2) advanced to the BCIAA championsh­ip. Also for Exeter, Justin Strauss had 11 kills; Luke Hoffman had eight kills; and Tyler Goldsborou­gh had six kills, three blocks, two digs, an ace and an assist. For Berks Catholic, Shae Wolfe had six kills and three blocks; Colin Balash had 14 digs; and Jack Hagelbarge­r had 15 assists and three blocks.

Exeter and Gov. Mifflin met in the final Tuesday, May 15, 6 p.m. at Wyomissing.

DANIEL BOONE 3, WYOMISSING­1» On May 10, the Blazers took the last two sets to claim their Berks Conference match with the Spartans. Set scores were 25-10, 22-25, 25-10 and 25.20.

Scott Schilling had 12 kills and four blocks for Boone while Sean Zamichieli added nine kills and four digs. Peter Scott contribute­d six kills and six digs; and Colin Gabbett had six kills, five digs and two aces.

EXETER 3, WEST YORK 0 » On May 7, the Eagles swept their non-league match with West York by set scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-11.

Reese Ganter had 24 assists and two kills for Exeter. Luke Hoffman added six kills and three blocks, Tyler Goldsborou­gh had five kills, 10 digs and three aces; and Jason Garvin contribute­d another 10 aces for the Eagles.

EXETER 3, KUTZTOWN 0 » On May 10, the Eagles swept their Berks Conference pairing with the Cougars by set scores of 25-19, 25-8 and 25-16.

Reese Ganter six kills, one block, one dig, four aces and 34 assists to key Exeter. Tyler Goldsborou­gh chipped in with 12 kills, one block and three aces; Luke Hoffman had nine kills and one block; and Ben Ruth added 10 digs, one ace and two assists.

EXETER 3, BERKS CATHOLIC 0» On May 12, the Eagles swept the Saints to qualify for the BCIAA championsh­ip. Set scores were 25-13, 25-21 and 25-14.

Jonas Conner had 15 kills, Ryan Lawes 28 assists and five aces and Casey Klahr six kills and seven digs to lead the Mustangs.

Boys track

TWIN VALLEY 78, DANIEL BOONE 72 » On May 7, Jason Cremi was a two-event winner for the Blazers in their Berks Conference meet with the Raiders.

Cremi ran a 23.0 in the 200 and went 42-3 to win the triple jump.

Girls track

TWIN VALLEY 102, DANIEL BOONE 47 » At Birdsboro May 7, Laura Tarabolett­i won two throwing events to head the Blazers in their Berks Conference meet with the Raiders.

Tarabolett­i got her firsts in the shot put (30-4) and the discus (89-0).
