Get ready for the holidays at Clay on Main

- From Liz Wheeler

Clay on Main, a community arts center in Oley, is a place where families and friends can gather to make and enjoy art and music.

The homey studio is always bustling around the holidays, with familyfriendly workshops twice a month, a winter craft exhibit and sale, and music at the Half Moon café.

They also offer private classes and crafting parties; community members can simply get in touch to set something up.

“Lots of people are looking for new ways to celebrate with friends and loved ones,” explains Liz Wheeler, Clay on Main’s managing director. “I think we’re all looking for meaningful connection. There’s something really special about creating something handmade together. That’s why we’re encouraging folks to get in touch with us to set something up. We’re really good at doing it, and it’s fun for us too; it’s really rewarding to figure out the perfect project for each group to make.”

There are also plenty of scheduled activities lined up this winter. Visitors might enjoy checking out Clay on Main’s annual Coop members’ holiday show, open from Nov. 11 to Dec. 6.

The public is welcome to view the exhibit or browse for artisan-made gifts during the studio’s normal hours: Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10-2, Wednesdays from 10-5, and Sundays from 1-4. In addition, the exhibit is part of the Fall into Winter tour of nine local art centers on the weekend of November 17 and 18, and will be open on those two days from 10 to 5.

For music lovers, the Half Moon Café is Clay on Main’s live performance venue. Shows are Friday evenings and start with opening acts at 7:15. Rhythm Road will perform on November 16, and the Druckenmillers with Norm Williams November 30. There are also open mics on the first Monday evening of each month, and ukulele jams on the last Sundays from 3:30 to 5:30.

Workshops include “Fused Glass Ornaments” on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m., “Funky Ferments: Make your own sauerkraut” on Dec. 4 at 2 p.m., and “Decorate a Cheese or Butter Bell” on Dec. 8 at 10 a.m.

Clay on Main is a nonprofit artists’ cooperative, located at 313 Main St in the historic village of Oley. The studio offers art instruction and gallery space for local artists, as well as live music and more.

Clay on Main houses a complete clay studio, a slumped and fused glass studio, a live performance venue, and a yoga room, in addition to the co-op and gallery. Clay on Main is open to the public on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10-2, Wednesdays from 10-5, and Sundays from 1-4.
