A.D. Moyer Lumber celebrates 80th anniversary

Fourth-generation family owned and operated business has locations in Gilbertsville, Pottstown, Bethlehem and Kutztown

The fourth-generation family owned and operated business has locations in Gilbertsville, Pottstown, Bethlehem and Kutztown and has been serving Southeastern Pennsylvania with quality building materials since 1939.

The company’s chosen slogan to mark the 80th anniversary celebration, “Still Going Strong”. Appropriate, considering it powered into the noteworthy anniversary on the momentum of 2018… its best year ever.

“We are proud and honored to be celebrating this 80-year milestone,” said Scott Moyer who co-owns and operates the company with his cousin, Terry. “As third generation owners, we grew up in the business and have labored through many economic peaks and valleys. It gives us great pride to guide the fourth generation of family into the business and help them set up for continued success as our fathers did for us.

“There’s no question that we owe our growth and longevity to top-notch, experienced, dedicated and conscientious employees, and to the loyal customers of the surrounding communities, many whose parents shopped here and their parents before them.”

Scott’s sons Doug and Clint, and Terry’s sons Alex and Erik, have assumed various leadership roles within the organization in recent years.

In June of 2017 A.D. Moyer purchased its fourth location, the Building Materials and Millwork Division of the former Berks Products in Kutztown. This acquisition allowed the company to better serve eastern Berks County including a significant expansion of its millwork production capabilities. At the same time, the company rebranded its third location in Bethlehem (formerly Moyer Lumber & Hardware) to match the Gilbertsville, Pottstown and Kutztown locations.

Considerable capital improvements and technology upgrades followed and continue to be implemented throughout the organization. Each location’s localized point-of-sale systems were replaced with a centralized cloud-ready business management solution that ties all four locations together in a single database. A new cloudbased phone system was added to bridge the voice communication across all locations. An advanced mobile-first website with employee intranet and contractor extranet was launched. New estimating software, GPS Fleet Tracking systems, and more continue to be introduced.

In 1939 the late Amandus D. Moyer purchased and disassembled the famed wooden roller coaster at the Sanatoga Amusement Park, followed by a coal cracker from the Pennsylvania coal region, and hauled the lumber to his home in Gilbertsville to be sold to his customers. That home became the present location of the company’s Gilbertsville headquarters. The Pottstown location opened in 1974 on the site of a local baseball field, and the Bethlehem location was added in 1984 at the site of the former New Penn Trucking Company.
