Gov. Mifflin girls basketball wins Berks I, advance to BCIAA semifinals

GOV. MIFFLIN 54, SCHUYLKILL VALLEY 39 >> At Reiffton Feb. 9, Destiny White scored 13 points and the Mustangs led 40-11 midway through the third quarter on their way to victory in the Berks Conference quarterfin­als.

Sydney Himmelberg­er scored 12 points to lead Schuylkill Valley.

GOV. MIFFLIN 53, READING

HIGH 49 >> At Shillingto­n Feb. 4, Destiny White scored a season-high 20 points and hit 4-of-7 3-pointers to help the Mustangs knock off the Red Knights and capture the Berks I title.

Ta’Shonna Wright-Gaskins’ steal and layup in the closing seconds, when Reading had a possession to tie, sealed it for Mifflin. Briana Seltzer scored 14 points for Reading. Katara Key made a shot with five seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

HAMBURG 35, DANIEL BOONE 26>> At Hamburg Feb. 4, Julie Harbonic scored 13 points and Allison Bashore scored 11 to lead the Hawks (2-8, 8-14) over the Blazers (1-9, 6-14).

Courtney Gabbett scored nine points to lead Daniel Boone.

MUHLENBERG 36, DANIEL BOONE 26 >> At Birdsboro Feb. 6, Courtney Gabbett’s 12-point outing was the high point for the Blazers in their loss to the Muhls.

Muhlenberg blanked Boone in the third quarter, boosting its lead to 29-12 going into the fourth quarter. TWIN VALLEY 38, EXETER 31 >> At Reiffton Feb. 4, Peyton McDaniel scored 10 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter to help the Raiders (7-3, 17-4) rally past the Eagles (1-9, 8-14) and all but clinch second place in Berks I.

Exeter carried a 26-21 lead into the fourth before Twin Valley made 9-of-12 free throws and outscored the Eagles 17-5. Kelly Fetter scored a game-high 20 points to lead Exeter.

DISTRICT 3 TOURNAMENT >>

Seven Berks girls basketball teams earned berths in the District 3 playoffs. The qualifiers are Gov. Mifflin, Wilson and Reading in Class 6A; Twin Valley and Berks Catholic in Class 5A; Wyomissing in Class 4A; and Antietam in Class 2A.

In 6A, No. 6 Gov. Mifflin has a first-round game with No. 11 Red Lion on Feb. 18. Also Feb. 18, No. 7 Wilson will host No. 10 Manheim Township and No. 9 Reading High will play at No. 8 Harrisburg.

Twin Valley is seeded No. 2 in 5A and will open Feb. 19 at home against No. 15 West York. Berks Catholic is seeded No. 10 and faces No. 7 Lower Dauphin Feb. 19.

In 6A, seven teams qualify to the PIAA tournament from District 3; eight in 5A.

Boys basketball

BCIAA TOURNAMENT >> The Berks County playoffs begin Feb. 11. No. 1 seed Reading faces No. 8 Brandywine Heights at Gov. Mifflin, followed by No. 2 Berks Catholic vs. No. 7 Conrad Weiser. At Reading, No. 5 Muhlenberg takes on No. 4 Wilson. No. 3 Kutztown and No. 6 Gov. Mifflin face off at Exeter.

The semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 13 and championsh­ip on Friday, Feb. 15 will be held at Santander Arena.

DISTRICT 3 TOURNAMENT

>> Nine Berks County boys basketball teams qualified for the District 3 playoffs: Wilson, Reading, Muhlenberg, Berks Catholic, Schuylkill Valley, Kutztown, Brandywine Heights, Antietam and Berks Christian.

In Class 6A, Wilson, the No. 1 seed, and No. 3 Reading both received firstround byes and await quarterfin­als on Feb. 22

The Saints, 4A defending champions, open with quarterfin­al vs. No. 6 Elco on Feb. 21. Schuylkill Valley is seeded No. 9 and travels to No. 8 Susquehann­a Township on Feb. 18.

In 3A, Kutztown is the No. 3 seed and Brandywine Heights the No. 4. The Cougars have a home quarterfin­al Feb. 18 against No. 6 Biglervill­e. The Bullets open against No. 5 Lancaster Mennonite on Feb. 18 at home.

EXETER 81, DANIEL BOONE 49 >> At Birdsboro Feb. 5, Colin Gehringer had 14 points to lead four players in double figures as the Eagles (37, 9-11) defeated the Blazers (0-10, 7-15).

Matt Davidheise­r added 12 points, Joe Rohrbach 11 and Alex Javier 10 for Exeter. Jared Tranovich led Boone with 15 points on Senior Night. COCALICO 68, EXETER 51 >> At Reiffton Feb. 6, Conor Mack scored 24 points and Peyton Stetler made six 3’s for 18, heading the Cocalico Eagles (13-6) in the win over the Exeter Eagles (9-12).

Kyle Holmes, with 13, and Jason Metz and Wesley Murray, with 10 apiece, led Exeter.

READING HIGH 57, GOV. MIFFLIN 32 >> At Geigle Complex Feb. 5, Wesley Butler had a game-high 22 points to lead the Red Knights (9-1, 15-6) over the Mustangs (4-6, 1012), giving them the Berks I title.

Daniel Colter added 16 points for Reading High. Bryce Harman led Mifflin with 11 points.

Wrestling

CONESTOGA VALLEY 46, DANIEL BOONE 19 >> At Birdsboro Feb. 7, Chase Stehman’s technical fall at 120 was the high point for the Blazers in their non-league loss to Conestoga Valley.

Boone also got major decisions from Gavin Richard (113) and James Hogan (138). Devin Dolla (152) and Brady Barton (285) added three-point verdicts for the Blazers. Boys bowling DANIEL BOONE 3, CONRAD WEISER 0 >> At Berks Lanes Feb. 5, Alex Horton’s 792 series led the Blazers in their match with the Scouts.

Boone was also bolstered by Spencer Witzel’s 685.

EXETER 3, HAMBURG 0 >> At Hiester Lanes Feb. 5, Tanner Schwenk and Ethan Reimert rolled 605 series to lead the Eagles in their match with the Hawks.

Zach Prizer chipped in with a 597 for Exeter, Hamburg was headed by Brad Hepner’s 566. GOV. MIFFLIN 3, READING

HIGH 0 >> At Berks Lanes Feb. 4, Alex Coldren rolled a 702 series to lead the Mustangs in their match with the Red Raiders.

Clayton Inderbitze­n chipped in with a 683 for Mifflin, and Kevin Baver with a 625.

Girls bowling

DANIEL BOONE 3, CONRAD WEISER 0 >> At Berks Lanes Feb. 5, Mollie Maggs rolled a 514 series to key the Blazers in their match with the Scouts.

Alyssa Blood chipped in with a 503 for Boone.

EXETER 3, HAMBURG 0 >>

At Hiester Lanes Feb. 5, Hailee Schollenbe­rg rolled a 598 series to key the Eagles in their match with the Hawks.

Megan Myers added a 525 for Exeter. Veronica Heckman led Hamburg with her 533 series.

GOV. MIFFLIN 3, READING HIGH 0 >> At Berks Lanes Feb. 4, Emily Garl rolled a 649 series to key the Mustangs in their match with the Red Raiders.

EXETER 94, BLUE MOUNTAIN

92>> At Blue Mountain Feb. 4, Chris and Luke Scoboria joined with Nicholas Griffith to win pairs of individual events for the Eagles as they edged Blue Mountain in their meet.

Chris’ firsts came in the 200 IM (2:08.13) and 100 back (57.79), Luke’s in the 200 free (1:48.49) and 100 free (49.39) and Nicholas’ in the 50 free (23.89) and 100 fly (59.08). The trio also contribute­d to Exeter winning the 200 medley in 1:47.65 and the 200 free in 1;31.86.

MUSTANGS SWEEP >> At Wyomissing Feb. 5, Gov. Mifflin took both ends of a threeschoo­l Central Penn League meet. The Mustangs outswam Daniel Boone 10870 and Wyomissing 130-26, with the Blazers topping the Spartans 92-40.

Shane Stauffer and Aiden McCurley each won pairs of events for Mifflin, Stauffer taking the 50 free (22.51) and 500 free (5:02.89) while McCurley headed the 100 free (48.55) and the 100 breast (1:01.39). Boone got two firsts from Chris Guiliano (100 fly, 53.31; 100 back, 54.42) and one from Jacob Santos (200 free, 1:55.75).

Girls swimming

BLUE MOUNTAIN 110, EXETER 74>> At Blue Mountain Feb. 4, Ariana Shchuka and Katherine Kerchner had the Eagles’ lone first-place finishes in their meet with Blue Mountain.

Shchuka won the diving competitio­n with a score of 233.15 points, and Kerchner took the 100 breast in 1;16.02.

MUSTANGS GO 2-0 >> At Wyomissing Feb. 5, Gov. Mifflin took both ends of a threeschoo­l Central Penn League meet. The Mustangs won out over Daniel Boone 14238 and Wyomissing 138-32, with the Blazers getting a split with their 95-59 victory over the Spartans.

Emma Steckiel was a two-event winner for GM, taking the 200 IM (2:09.26) and 100 back (59.61).
