Girls basketball

The Gov. Mifflin girls basketball team won its 12th county championsh­ip with a dramatic double overtime victory over Reading, 61-53, on Feb. 15 at Santander Arena.

The final was tight as can be with 17 lead changes and seven ties, with neither team leading by more than five points until overtime.

Tied 51-51, Gov. Mifflin got two buckets from Ta’Shonna WrightGask­ins, then went 6-for-8 at the free throw line to sealit. WrightGask­ins finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds and six steals, and Kayla DelVecchio had 16 points and 23 rebounds to lead the Mustangs.

Jasmine Perez finished with a game-high 23 points, 13 rebounds and six steals for the Red Knights.

GOV. MIFFLIN 40, WILSON 36 >>

At Santander Arena Feb. 13, Ta’Shonna Wright-Gaskins finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, Sydney Payne hit a clutch 3-pointer in the fourth quarter and the Mustangs held off the Bulldogs in the Berks semifinals.

Destiny White chipped in with another nine points for Mifflin, which also got eight-point outings from Stella Mollica and Kayla DelVecchio.

Boys basketball

KUTZTOWN 44, GOV. MIFFLIN 36 >> At Reiffton Feb. 11, the Cougars started the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run and that run propelled them to victory over the Mustangs

in the Berks Conference playoff quarterfin­al at Exeter.

The game was tied at 29 at the end of the third quarter, but the Cougars shot well in the fourth quarter going 7-of-13 while Governor

Mifflin went 2-of-15. The Mustangs clawed their way back into the game after spotting Kutztown an 11-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Lucas Floyd led all scorers with 15 points and he had nine rebounds and teamed with Lorencz Jean-Baptiste to dominate the glass. Jean-Baptiste had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Brandon Gehris also scored double digits with 11 points.

Bryce Harman was one of three Mustangs to score 10 points and he also had 12 rebounds. Bryce Black and CamRon Stewart each had 10 points for the Mustangs. Bryce Stubler and Josh Klahr each had five assists for Governor Mifflin.

Boys Bowling

Oley Valley’s Brandon Gust won the BCIAA Individual Boys Bowling Tournament on Feb. 14 at Berks Lanes.

Gust rolled a two-day total of 1,971 to edge Alex Coldren of Gov. Mifflin (1,939), defending champion Riley Celmer of Fleetwood and Aidan D’Souza of Wilson.

Gust, who placed 15th a year ago, had a 246 average over eight games in the county tournament. He averaged 209 pins per game during the regular season.

Gust bowled 1,013 on Day 1 and 958 on Day 2.

Coldren (1,939), Celmer (1,877), D’Souza (1,841), Oley’s Aaron Fisher (1,796) and Wilson’s Jimmy Figura (1,790) also received medals for finishing in the top six. Wilson won the team award.
