Amity approves disaster emergency

- By Denise Larive

AMITY » Without a crystal ball to determine the length and severity of the coronavirus pandemic on township residents, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a disaster emergency resolution on March 18.

That allows the township to pay its bills without a board meeting.

“In an abundance of caution, and in case we need to do anything,” Township Manager Troy Bingaman said about the need for a disaster emergency resolution. The resolution also allows for the township to engage in any necessary competitive bidding, and for local agencies to receive any state or federal emergency funding (if any becomes available), medical services, or other services, supplies, or materials. Board members unanimously approved to waive the late fee on the second quarter sewer bills that are to be paid by April 30.

Those sewer bills will be mailed out March 23-28.

Bingaman said the township won’t shut off water for non-payment during the disaster emergency.

The board agreed that it should follow the federal government limitations on social gatherings of 10 or more people at township recreation sites.

They agreed to post on the township website that “Amity Township is adhering to the recommendations of Governor Wolf and does not condone/recommend use of public recreation facilities for groups of 10 or more.”

“Due to staffing, no additional measures are being taken to disinfect playgrounds, restrooms, picnic tables, fields, or gathering areas.”

Board meetings will still be held at the township building, 2004 Weavertown Road, but the building is otherwise closed to the public until further notice.

Public comment can be made by telephoning or emailing township staff.
