Wilson’s Mitchell commits to Marquette

- By Mike Drago

Wilson’s Stevie Mitchell has committed to play basketball at Marquette, according to a published report later confirmed by a source.

Mitchell, a rising senior, did not respond to the Reading Eagle to confirm the report, but a source close to him said that he accepted the Marquette offer Wednesday.

The report on 247sports.com says that Golden Eagles head coach Steve Wojciechowski is looking at the 6-2 Mitchell as a point guard.

“Stevie is a skilled point guard prospect,” according to 247sports analyst Travis Branham. “He is a polished handle with advanced footwork (and does) a good job utilizing jabs and a change of direction to get where he wants on the floor.”

Mitchell would be Marquette’s first point guard recruit from the Class of 2021.

“(Stevie) has a score-first mentality and does so from all three levels,” Branham said, “but is also a willing and talented passer with vision who can facilitate with both hands.”

Mitchell announced in early June that he had trimmed his list to seven schools: Villanova, Temple, Saint Joseph’s, Miami, Stanford, Georgia Tech and Marquette. He informed the other schools Wednesday of his intentions.

Mitchell took an official visit to Temple and said in June that he would like to visit the other six schools if possible. Because of travel restrictions due to COVID-19, Mitchell was not able to make campus visits.

“The sooner I’m able to get out to those places, the sooner I’ll be able to decide,” he said. “I’m definitely going to try to get out to all of them, just to be able to see the campuses and be around the coaches. I haven’t met all the staffs in person yet. Just having the chance to be around them is gonna be big.”

The Berks Player of the Year has at least 15 offers, including ones from the other Big Five schools, Penn and La Salle, as well as Penn State.

Mitchell told the Reading Eagle in June he wanted to make his final choice before the start of his senior season.

“I just want to enjoy the season, and not have thoughts on it (deciding on college),” he said previously. “(Once the season starts) it’s more of a team thing, other than people wanting to know where I’m going to go.”

Mitchell is believed to be the first Wilson boys basketball player to earn All-State honors, but it came as no surprise.

He was named Berks Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring at 22.3 points and averaging 5.4 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 1.9 assists per game.

He set a program record for points in a season (648) and became the first to average 20 points or better in consecutive seasons. He has 1,496 career points and is positioned to become just the sixth Berks player to reach 2,000 — and the first in
