Donations collected for animal shelter

- By Susan Miers Smith

Steve Moyer Subaru livestreamed an event to Facebook from its Leesport dealership Oct. 20 to raise awareness about adoption at and donations for the Animal Rescue League of Berks County in Cumru Township.

Kenneth Veit, marketing director for Steve Moyer Subaru and Moyer Nissan, said this year’s event was scaled back because of the coronavirus pandemic, but it was still important to do something for the animals at the ARL.

“In good times and in challenging times, we’re still going to put as much support behind them as we can,” Veit said.

He said the dealership facilitated a grant from the ASPCA to the ARL so adoption fees could be reduced by $50 through Thursday. Subaru of America also is donating $100 per pet adopted at the ARL during the Subaru Loves Pets event throughout the month. He encouraged the public to give as well.

“Give what you can,” Veit said. “Times are tough for everyone, we are well aware of that. In previous years, maybe we were able to collect six carloads of donations. Maybe this year we only get one, every little bit counts.”

One of the animals featured at the event was 4- year- old terrier mix Gretchen.

Her foster mom, Amanda Bickleman of West Lawn, said she is a bit of an underdog because Gretchen does not show well in a shelter situation because of her nervousness there and also probably needs to be the only animal in the house. Gretchen has been at Bickleman’s home for three weeks and is totally housebroken.

“She is a very loving dog,” Bickleman said.

Gretchen also is fixed, has a microchip, is up-todate on all vaccinations and does not take any medicine. She is free to adopt because her fees are being covered by Bickleman’s employer, Knies Insurance Group, Honey Brook, Chester County.
