- By David Mekeel

The new year will see a new leader take over the reins of the Gov. Mifflin School District.

Bill McKay, who has served as Gov. Mifflin’s assistant superintendent since 2016, has been hired as the next superintendent of the district. His selection was unanimously approved by the school board Nov. 2.

McKay will assume his new role on Jan. 1.

McKay will replace Dr. Steve Gerhard, who announced last month that he would be leaving the district to serve as assistant executive director of the Chester County Intermediate Unit.

In a message sent to Gov. Mifflin families, school board President Jim Ulrich said it was important to have a familiar face taking over leadership of the district.

“In recognition of the work of our leadership team, teachers and staff, we believe that continuity is key to maintaining and building upon our progress,” he said. “Not only do we believe that Mr. McKay’s service as the assistant superintendent makes him the most qualified for this role, but through his leadership we believe we will be able to successfully continue the opportunities and initiatives propelling our district forward.”

McKay has more than 30 years of experience in public education, serving as an elementary school teacher, building principal and assistant superintendent.

During his time at Gov. Mifflin he has led initiatives including:

• Developing a professional partnership with Columbia’s Teachers College in support of the implementation of Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop and the districtwide Mifflin Reads! initiative.

• Implementing STEM education in grades prekindergarten through eighth.

• Creating the Rabbit Run Riparian Buffer outdoor learning lab/classroom for grades prekindergarten through 12th.

• Helping develop literacy outreach communitywide through the Book Bundles and Little Learning Libraries program.

McKay is originally from Pitts

burgh. He and his family have lived in the Gov. Mifflin district for the last three decades, and his wife and three children are all Gov. Mifflin alumni.
