Kimberton Whole Foods to expand Douglassville store
Kimberton Whole Foods announced this week that it will be expanding its Douglassville location in January .
he organic grocery and health food store said in a social media post that it will add an additional 1,800 square feet and that it will be “introducing a wider variety of organic produce, fresh meats and cheeses, baked goods, frozen foods and fresh prepared meals and drinks.”
Kimberton Whole Foods also said the expanded store include “ample room to browse and check out.” Construction has proceeded on the addition, which will take up a former flower shop that was next to the original store.
The store will be closed from Jan. 11 to Jan. 13 to complete construction and to reset inventory.
Located at 1139 Benjamin Franklin Highway (Route 422) in the Benjamin Franklin Court shopping center, the store first opened in 2007 and is the only Berks County location.
Other locations include Kimberton, Chester County; Collegeville, Montgomery County; Downingtown, Chester County; Malvern, Chester County; and Ottsville, Bucks County.
Beginning as a farm store in East Pikeland Township, Chester County in 1986, Terry and Pat Brett sold organic yogurt made onsite at what is now known as Seven Stars Farm. Kimberton Whole Foods was founded in 1994 and is a multi-generational family business.
According to company’s website, it has a commitment to local farming and the prioritization of organic and fair food. It defines local as being within 100 miles of its Downingtown distribution center because those vendors can decrease their distribution costs and carbon footprints while simultaneously reaching more customers when they partner with Kimberton.
Expansion has been part of Kimberton Whole Foods’ plan in past few years. It opened a 12,800 squarefoot location in Collegeville in 2018, replacing a smaller store.
