WILSON TURNS BACK MIFFLIN’S UPSET BID
Bulldogs rally for 59-51 victory over Mustangs
No one was expecting this Wilson team to challenge what last year’s District 3 champs accomplished, but at this point the Bulldogs are off to a better start.
They won their seventh straight to open the season Wednesday, holding off upsetminded Gov. Mifflin 59-51 in a Berks Conference Division I game at Shillington.
The Bulldogs (5-0, 8-0) trailed through much of the second and third quarters before Stevie Mitchell gave them the lead for good with a 3-pointer that made it 47-45 in the final minute of the third quarter.
That was part of a game-turning 11-point run that sent the Bulldogs ahead by as many as eight points and derailed the hopes of the Mustangs (0-4, 1-6.)
Mitchell finished with a game-high 24 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
Justin Spotts led Mifflin with 19 points; Greg Suber had 17.
A year ago, the Bulldogs lost their seventh game, falling to Central York; they haven’t lost since.
The win was the 30th straight for the Bulldogs, who went 28-1 last year and ended the season with 22 consecutive victories before the PIAA Tournament was shut down due to the coronavirus.
The Mustangs came out strong and led throughout most of the first half.
Suber hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Mifflin a 17-9 lead after one quarter.
Mitchell opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer, and a three-point play, and the Bulldogs briefly took the lead at 20-19. Spotts scored six points in the second quarter to help the Mustangs go into the half leading 31-28.
Suber had 15 points at halftime. Mitchell became the 13th player in Berks history to surpass 1,700 career points. He ended the game with 1,709 points.
Ahead of him are Hamburg’s Mel Edwards (1,713), Berks Catholic’s Donovon Jack (1,725) and Muhlenberg’s Dave Kapaona, who is 10th all-time in Berks with 1,756 points.
With close to a full schedule, Mitchell
can become just the sixth player in Berks to reach 2,000 career points.
