Hamburg beats Weiser in district quarterfin­al

Hamburg scored three runs in the first inning and six in the second to defeat Conrad Weiser 9-2 in a District 3 Class 4A softball quarterfin­al game Thursday at Hamburg.

The top-seeded Hawks (17-4) will host fifth-seeded Fleetwood in a semifinal game Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Hamburg took control early against Berks II rival and eighth-seeded Weiser (12-9).

Kylah Reading led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run.

In the second, Amelia Gassert, Katie Behler, Anabel Kennedy, Skylar Shuman and Erica Gerner drove in runs.

That was more than enough for pitcher Hailey Strunk, who allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits. She walked six and struck out four.

Behler finished 2-for-4 with two runs, Kennedy was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Shuman was 3-for-4 and Gerner 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Emily Karetas was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Weiser.

FLEETWOOD 10, NORTHERN LEBANON 1 » Thursday at Fredericks­burg, Fleetwood scored four runs in the second inning on the way to a victory over Northern Lebanon in a District 3 Class 4A quarterfin­al.

Morgan Koehler homered and drove in three runs, Megan Brattley went 3-for-4 with three runs, winning pitcher Kaitlyn Pytleski went 2-for-3 with two runs, Haylie Mauger was 1-for-2 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, and Katie Stump had two RBIs for the fifth-seeded Tigers (14-6).

Fleetwood advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2002. The Tigers will play at top-seeded Hamburg on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.00

Pytleski allowed nine hits, walked four and struck out three against fourthseed­ed Northern Lebanon (17-4).

TWIN VALLEY 7, LAMPETERST­RASBURG 5 » Thursday at Lampeter, Twin Valley hit four home runs, including two by Liv Lichtner, to beat Lampeter-Strasburg in a District 3 Class 5A quarterfin­al.

The 11th-seeded Raiders (16-7), who clinched a berth in the PIAA Tournament, will travel to secondseed­ed Shippensbu­rg for a semifinal game Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The Greyhounds (19-3) beat Northeaste­rn 1-0 in eight innings Thursday.

Keiva Middleton hit a two-run home run in the first to give the third-seeded Pioneers (15-5) a 2-0 lead.

Twin Valley tied with two runs in the third on Megan Burnett’s two-run double, then took the lead with two runs in the third on solo homers by Lichtner and Madison Garber.

After Lampeter cut it to 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the inning, the Raiders scored three in the fourth to go up 7-3 as Lichtner and Natali Foster hit home runs.

Garber went 3-for-4 for the Raiders, who will be making their fourth straight trip to the semifinals.

Thursday at Newville, Berks Catholic committed six errors in falling to Big Spring in a District 3 Class 4A quarterfin­al.

The third-seeded Bulldogs (18-3) were down 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but took advantage of two errors to score two unearned runs to take a 3-2 lead.

They added two more runs in the sixth.

Pitcher Danielle Hayward went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple for the sixth-seeded Saints (14-5). She also allowed five hits and struck out seven in six innings.

Rebecca Adams and Giana Mirenda each had two hits for Berks Catholic.

Big Spring will host Middletown in a semifinal game Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
