A35-year-old Cedartown man has been arrested on a laundry list of charges after a heated domestic violence altercation took place Wednesday morning, June 1 on Elizabeth Street.

Clarence Sanders Jr., 35, of Cedartown, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, four counts of cruelty to children, pointing a firearm at a person, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, terroristic threats and acts, obstruction of a 9-11 call, obstruction of law enforcement officers and reckless conduct. He is currently at the Polk County Jail.

According to Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome, Cedartown Police received a call around 7 a.m. on June 1 reporting a domestic violence situation. “The call reported that a man threatened his wife’s life with a rifle and then fled the r e s i dence. Our officers quickly arrived on scene at an Elizabeth Street residence, secured the residence and set up a perimeter,” Newsome said.

Once the perimeter was established, the police department’s K9 officer was deployed to track the suspect. “Our K9 made short work of the search and Mr. Sanders was located in a wooded area near Barnes Alley and Martielle Street. He was apprehended without incident or injury,” Newsome said.

He also reported that while backtracking the perimeter, officers recovered five fully loaded long guns.

Newsome stated that Sanders had recently had a run in with the law stemming from an aggravated assault case on May 21.

“He was allegedly involved with an exchange of gunfire on Thompson Street,” Newsome said. Sanders had recently been released on bond regarding that case.

District Attorney Jack Browning stated that he will seek revocation of the earlier bond from the May 21 incident and will oppose any bond in the current case.
