Rockmart volunteer is honored at Red Cross gala as a Coordinator of the Year
The American Red Cross of Atlanta recently celebrated dedicated volunteers and supporters’ week at an annual appreciation event at Turner Field’s 755 Club.
A total of 1,800 individuals and partners were honored at the event for their selfless gifts of time, money and blood to help fulfill the Red Cross mission.
More than 90% of the American Red Cross workforce is composed of volunteers, including more than 1,590 in metro Atlanta. Those selected for local recognition were nominated by their peers for outstanding contributions to the Red Cross.
Doris Scott of Rockmart was nominated for Blood Drive Coordinator of the Year. She is the Rockmart Blood Drive Coordinator and a member of Victory Baptist Church.
While accepting her award, she said, “It is my passion to help people and I’m honored to be a part of such a great organization. It’s exciting to see our blood drives grow and watch people come out and give their blood to help others.”
She later emphasized that she was humbled by the honor, adding: “I am not the only person in Rockmart that should be recognized for dedication to the blood drives.”
Scott emphasized that it is “a team effort” and personally lauded the following volunteers: Audrey Williams, Patricia Childers, Martha McDurmon, Darlene Smith, Faye Borders, Peggy Watts,Liz Graham, and Shirley Ingle and any individual that helps make the local drives successful.
Volunteers power the Red Cross, making it possible for the organization to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies. On average, 2 to 3 families a day experience the compassion of ARC disaster volunteers. This year, nearly 2,000 of known neighbors with emergency needs for food, clothing, shelter, health and mental health support and recovery guidance, got the help they needed after local disasters, thanks to local volunteers.
Over the past year, volunteers also helped thousands of people in the community by training them in lifesaving skills, providing emergency services for military members, veterans and their families, and supporting the collection of life-saving blood and platelet donations through community blood drives and donor centers.
The Red Cross invites members of the community to become a volunteer. There are many ways people can get involved.
