Local residents enjoy Back to School bash for August Rockmart party

- From Staff Reports

A late afternoon thunderstorm blew into Downtown Rockmart prior to the August Block Party on Friday, Aug 5.

The rain - combined with hot temperatures - was described as reasons the crowd was smaller than usual. However, people began arriving around 6 p.m., including Mayor Steve Miller and several City staff members.

They came to give out school supplies and enjoy the fun atmosphere on Marble Street.

A laughing mayor was seen and this created a positive feeling among those attending. Several out of

town visitors noted that it was refreshing to see city officials take an interest in the downtown area.

Jack Deems of Dallas said this is one of the reasons he brings his family to Rockmart area events.

“There is always a genuine feeling of welcome in this small town,” he said. “It reminds me of my childhood when grandfather told of how everyone once came to town on Saturday.”

The back-to-school theme brought parents and grandparents. They were seeking school supplies in local stores and to take advantage of free distribution by such groups as Youth Summerfest. This event, held annually in Cedartown, has become popular for all ages since it features games and free food plus backpacks for students.

Pastor Joy Fredrick was among those assisting several children in Rockmart. Lailya Clark, Lauryn Clark and Aylissa Smith selected colorful backpacks. Smiles and shy words of thanks could be heard as the line grew.

Regina Moroy sat near a bouncy house hosted by Crossview Community Church. She answered questions and gave information to kids who wanted to enjoy this place of play.

Meanwhile, Aakayla Dudley and Markecia Dudley sat on a bench watching people.

Caden Yarbrough guarded a shopping cart, which held his cowboy boots. With a toothy grin, he talked about his dad and lots of fun.

Tiffany Sullivan joined a group of youth and children that gathered to watch animals provided by Tickled Pink Petting Zoo.

Organizers believe good buys at local stores has fueled the success of summer block parties in Rockmart. And, there is plenty of free fun and entertainment for all ages.

“Each block party includes a cross-section of people who are dedicated to bringing more homefolks and out of town visitors to see what Rockmart offers,” said Stacey Smith, director, Community Development.

Many of the people that typically flood the downtown area during the block parties provide opportunity for families with children to enjoy a night of wholesome activities.

People also take time to share a favorite meal with relatives at Slate Market Grill, Soli’s Soups, Salads and Sandwiches, Craftsy House / Zyra’s Sweets, The Rock Ice Cream Shop, Benny’s Eatery, Hometown Pizza or Grill Knucklehead Café.

Visiting family members also purchase something to take home from a variety of local shops, including J&L Discount, What’s New Consignment, The Perch on Marble, Blue Water, Rockmart Art Restoration, Lindsey Steel Art Gallery, Lovely Living, West Elm Antiques, Morgan Hardware, The Avenue, and others.

Smith said organizers and committee members are inviting any Rockmart business to become involved in this “hometown event.”

Everyone – merchants, city officials, and members of Rockmart Business Alliance, Polk Chamber of Commerce – and residents continue to promote the block parties.
