Healthy lifestyle choices for women focus of Chamber event

-

Good health is important to all women of every age.

Lawana Gurley, life coach, focused on this fact during a presentation at the Polk County Chamber of Commerce in Rockmart.

She talked to the group about how women help other people in their home, work place, community and other areas in their daily life.

When do you take time for you?

This question was answered as seldom or never. Several said they felt guilty if they did position their needs at the top of a priority list.

Such action can result in the dreaded word – stress. And, Gurley cautioned against letting situations affects an individual’s free choice until it could build into a level of tension that would affect personal relationships with family, friends and others.

She gave a brief explanation of how she learned to change her views on health. It began at the gym while she was finding new ways to reduce stress levels.

After a few visits she not only noticed her appearance was changing and her body was more fit but her selfimage was improving. Included in her observation was that no one seemed to be helping others and she developed a passion for and determined to help others to live a fulfilling, happy and healthy life.

Where did you get the idea that you are not important?

Those present concluded that it evolved from childhood where family members looked to the woman in their life to make sure their needs were met without thought about how much she was contributing of her time and energy.

Everyone agreed that women could create a generational cycle of taking care of all the family needs without thought of self. Daughters become mothers who remember what they have learned before marriage and they, in turn, pattern the same behavior for their children and grandchildren.

The group noted that women who never consider their own health need to take action. They agreed: You have responsibility of teaching others how to treat you.

If no effort is made to make a change, individuals get frustrated and stress levels rise. Sometimes this results in a rage of emotion that hits the boiling point and family members wonder what brought it about.

The conclusion is that women should take responsibility for personal health choices. The changes made could develop into patterns that become a cycle of balance that will be enjoyed by everyone in your life.

Tips include doing something you enjoy – music, dancing, reading, gardening, painting or other hobby – every day. The gift you give yourself will pay big dividends when stress levels disappear and you can control your emotions.

Don’t worry about problems. It doesn’t solve anything and you are spending your energy unwisely.

Don’t think about tomorrow. Live each day as if it is your last and note the difference in how you feel.

Learn to manage how you use your energy. Don’t waste it.

Get grounded and calm down. Life should be enjoyed, not endured.
