Area teams play in Rome for the annual Lady Devils Classic

- From Staff Reports

A stubborn storm passed over Floyd County on Saturday afternoon and brought the annual Lady Devils Classic softball tournament to a stop.

It also proved too much to allow the second and final day of the early-season tune-up to continue.

Cedartown was able to get their two games in on Friday for the tournament, but had to give up on Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs won 10-2 over LaFayette in game 1, then turned around and won again 10-2 over Excel Christian Academy.

Model softball coach Greg Tarter said the second round of 12 scheduled games were underway when a rain shower soaked the fields at Alto Park.

“We had to cancel the rest of the day,” Tarter said. “A couple of the fields were completely under water, and it would have taken the other fields several hours before they were playable.”

That, coupled with a few nearby lightning strikes, was enough for Tarter to decide to call off the remaining games and send everyone home.

Model had yet to play Rome in the Lady Blue Devils’ only scheduled game of the tournament and Tarter said his players were understandably disappointed.

“It’s usually a very competitive game,” Tarter said. “But we’ll play them a couple of times in the regular season and we’ll be looking forward to those.”

One early game that did go final before the rain came Saturday was the Pepperell- Rome matchup that ended with the Lady Dragons using an 11-run fourth inning to take Rome 18-2 in five innings.

Daylee McGraw had three RBIs and Jessie Burkhalter had two hits as Sydnie Edwards threw four innings, striking out five.

Pepperell (2-1) took advantage of four Rome errors and finished with nine hits. Rome will travel to North Murray on Monday while Pepperell will host Temple on Tuesday.
