Rockmart’s Morgan Sims grabbed a bobble catch on Aug. 19 that ended with a Yellow Jackets touchdown in the first game of two to kickoff the football season in the first ever Battle of the Border against Cherokee County, Ala. for more on this game and the Cedartown at Piedmont game.

PIEDMONT, Ala. — The Rockmart Yellow Jackets went across the state line to play their season opener Friday night and came away with a a big win as they won 54-28 over Cherokee County.

The game was the first of two contests in the Battle of the Borders event at Piedmont High School in Alabama. Cedartown played the late game against the host Bulldogs.

Rockmart scored five touchdowns in the first half, including a bobbled pass tucked in by Morgan Sims for a 48-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Bailey. The Jackets came out in the second half with an opening drive ending with Bailey — one half of a two quarterback system — scoring a touchdown on the ground. Sims also grabbed two interceptions.

Jackets head coach Biff Parson said he was unsurprised by Sims performance, or anyone else on the team for that matter, after a hard off-season of improvement. And despite putting up big numbers on the scoreboard, he was more concerned about the team’s overall performance.

“We know that if we can execute with the people we have in place, and we feel good that we are doing the right thing offensively and defensively,” Parson said. “Special teams was a big disappointment so obviously we as coaches have a lot of work to do over the weekend.”

Cherokee County attempted to cut the Jackets’ lead during the second half, including a 50-yard touchdown pass by Tyren Dupree to Quartez Henderson that proved to be the Warriors biggest play of the night.

The Jackets are back in action at 7:30 p.m. Friday as they host cross-county rival Cedartown.
