Rockmart stings Woodland in home win
ROCKMART — A 300- yard game for the Rockmart Yellow Jackets ended without drama Friday night as they won 37-12 over the Woodland Wildcats heading into their first bye week of the season.
Morgan Sims and Marcus Smith both put up two touchdowns apiece in the last nonconference game of the season for Rockmart (21), along with a quarterback keeper from Dylan Bailey.
Sims also grabbed two interceptions, one of which was called back after he returned it for a touchdown on defense following a penalty.
“We got a W, which is important coming off a loss,” said Rockmart head coach Biff Parson. “We’ve still got some things we’ve still got to work on. Offensively we didn’t really click for four quarters, and we had some mistakes on special teams … but defensively I thought we played outstanding.”
Woodland (0-2) was able to put some yardage of its own on later in the second half. The Wildcats scored off a blocked punt picked up by Emmanuel Jones, then on a 77-yard drive capped by a 10-yard touchdown run by KJ Combs.
Parson said that Rockmart’s off week will be important for the Yellow Jackets as they prepare for their first time back in Region 7AA in two years.
“This is our most important game, this first region game because we want to start off with a win there,” he said. “Armuchee is going to be a tough football team.”
The Indians had the week off before they host Temple next week and get into region play at Rockmart on Sept. 16.
