Hazmat called out to Aragon, nothing found after fire reported

- From Staff Reports

A variety of officials were in Aragon at spent midday in Aragon on Aug. 30 at a house at a Grove Street home that was first reported on fire, and then to have a possible meth lab inside.

But other than some items that police said were suspicious they found neither - other than a man using a portable grill indoors.

So that prompted officers from the Polk County Drug Task Force, the Georgia

Bureau of Investigation, Rockmart Fire and Rescue and the Polk County Fire Department to take over, sending a Hazmat team in for a brief search that yielded nothing.

Polk County DTF Sgt. Wayne Lloyd said initial reports for the find came in after Rockmart firefighters went in to battle what they thought was a house fire, and instead found a man inside using a portable charcoal grill indoors.

Firefighters and later those in Hazmat gear cleared the Aragon house and found nothing inside.

“They found com- ponents of what they believed to be a meth lab,” Lloyd said. “Right now we’re still looking at the evidence and it’s still under investigation.”

Lloyd said the case was being turned over to the Aragon Police Department and the man found inside with the grill might face charges pending the conclusion of the investigation into what firefighters found.

That man, David Ronnie Jay, 46, Aragon, was taken into custody on Aug. 30 by the Aragon Police Department on charges of second degree criminal damage to property and criminal trespass.
