PREA hears from Ferst Foundation’s Ross on Literacy campaign via books to local youth

From Press Release

- Debbie Ross from the Ferst Foundation spoke about its literacy campaign in Polk.

The 2016-2017 PREA opened for the beginning of its new session, with the theme: Reach Out To Make A Difference, at the Cherokee County Golf Course in Cedartown, with President Lynda Rutland welcoming many new retirees, and guests, with all encouraged to sign up for different positions that were offered.

After much bantering and bragging, followed by prizes and announcements, the group enjoyed a fantastic luncheon, which was preceded by a provocative reading and invocation by Gladys Gipson.

The guest speaker was Debbie Ross from the Ferst Foundation on Childhood Literacy (named for its founder), which the PREA will be supporting with its used book sales each month.

The Foundation serves its new books, from well-known publishers, to over 632 children, and is tax deductible. (The Children’s Academy in Rockmart dispenses free, usually mailed out, ageappropriate books from birth -5 years old.)

The Foundation speaker entertained more questions by those attending, well after the meeting was adjourned, but not before reminding us that: Good readers are usually good students.

The Association is now mourning the death of one of its faithful member, Ms. Brenda Richardson, whose tireless efforts in serving the Polk County Elementary school teachers, by supplying needy supplies quarterly, passed away suddenly on the eve of this meeting.

She had received during this meeting, the Perfect Attendance for the Year certificate.

The next meeting will be held at the Cedartown Golf Course on Oct. 16 at 11:30.m.
