Domestic Violence Walk a Mile event slated
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and once again the Bold and Beautiful Red Hatters of Cedartown are sponsoring a “Walk a Mile in her Shoes” at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.
Registration is $10 and will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. The walk will officially begin at 6 p.m. at the Main Street Park in front of Courthouse No. 2 and end at Peek Park on College Street in Cedartown.
Tony Brazier, coroner of Polk County, is the MC and Rev. Grady McDonald, Second Baptist Church of Cedartown will give an opening prayer.
Speaker will be Sheriff Johnny Moats or Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Blackman. Special guest speaker will be Chief James Newsome. Nancy Woods will be the featured singer.
The program is designed to motivate and educate the public about the issue of domestic violence.
Members of the Red Hatters are encouraging participants to wear a purple shirt and red shoes. Purple is the color for domestic violence.
Domestic violence facts:
1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime.
Women experience more than 4 million physical assaults and rapes because of their partners, and men are victims of nearly 3 million physical assaults.
Women are more likely to be killed by an intimate partner than men.
Women ages 20 to 24 are at greatest risk of becoming victims of domestic violence.
Every year, 1 in 3 women who is a victim of homicide is murdered by her current or former partner.
Annually, more than 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes.
