Seasonal products at farmers market

-

September brings a change in the season as leaf color begins to appear in Polk and surrounding area.

It also brings opportunity to shop for seasonal fruits and vegetables from local farmers: tomatoes, okra, green beans, long beans and purple hull peas; along with sweet potatoes, peppers, eggplant and corn. Look for many varieties of squashes at the market this week, including crooked neck, butternut and spaghetti squash!

Vendors are offering apples, pears, peaches, figs, Muscadines and grapes. These are perfect for baking, preserving, or enjoying immediately! Additionally, you can find local honey, homemade jams and jellies, canned goods, locally roasted coffee and farm fresh eggs!

Remember to support local meat vendors, including grass fed lamb and beef, and pasture raised pork and chicken.

Stop by the Community Booth sponsored by Polk Medical Center and check out in-season recipes and information regarding the newest cooking classes.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Farm-To-You BBQ happening at the market on September 22. You won’t want to miss it. Local pork, field peas, and collard greens along with cobbler and tea will be on the menu. Plates will be $12-$15 and available while supplies last. Plates can also be pre-paid and guaranteed for pick-up.
