Berry scholar scheduled to speak at Rockmart Library October 12
Berry College sophomore and Synovus Scholar Maddie Bess is scheduled to speak at the Rockmart Library as part of a series of talks on hydraulic fracturing in northwest Georgia Sept. 14 through Oct. 9.
Bess will speak at the Rockmart Library from 4: 45 to 5: 45 p. m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12 and from 5 to 6 p. m. Tuesday, Oct. 19 at the Cedartown Public Library.
The talk, “I ntroduction to fracking and implications for Northwest Georgia, will detail how hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, is the process of extracting natural gas from sub- surface shale deposits.
Bess said the presentation is “purely academic to provide land owners with information to make informed decisions and to raise awareness about the issue in surrounding communities using peer- reviewed scientific data.”
“Some s t r ongly people s upport fracking while others do not. . . I hope to present clear information on the true costs and benefits of natural gas fracking, in small communities and the U. S. at large,” Bess has said.

The Synovus Sophomore Scholars Program awards $ 2,000 to students who are rising sophomores and $ 500 for faculty or staff mentors to support projects related to the student’s exploration of academic, research or growth experiences such as research, internships, entrepreneurial service or work projects or artistic endeavors.
