Events Center in Cedartown headed back out for bid in hopes of saving money on project

The Lankford Events Center is heading back out to bid as revisions have been made on the building’s plan to try and save money on overall construction costs.

City manager Bill Fann said the city looks to mainly cut out many of the small but costly extras that he said really had no reason for being included in the designs originally. his paperwork and paying the $72 fee to get into the race.

Baldwin previously sat on the council and decided to return to politics following Burrus’ death because he felt Burrus would have wanted it to be a contested election, he previously told the Standard Journal.

But he wasn’t the only one. Steve “Skip” Elders also qualified on Monday before press time, according to Elections Director Karen Garmon.

SJ Editor Kevin Myrick attempted to get to Elders before press time for comment, but were unable to reach

Those extras, like stamped artificial stone accents for the side of the buildings that will be cut out of the overall plan now, had totaled up to thousands of dollars that can be saved.

“Another way we can save is by taking out the pavers and just using stamped concrete,” Fann said.

He said that by eliminating specific areas of detail work that can be done with different him on the phone.

Both men had to meet the stipulations to be mayor, along with residency requirements, and fill out paperwork to be considered to be on the ballot.

The pair face off against Melisa Hughes, who entered the race in late June to face off against Burrus who was seeking to retain the seat he had by virtue of his pro tem position on the council.

His council seat also came open in August for qualifying with a contested race as well.

The city won’t know until bids come back in October how much the price has gone down by making these valuebased design changes, Fann said.

As bids go out in October, those contractors who first turned in prices for the cost of construction to the city will get a second chance to lower their final estimates, along with bringing in new business.

“When we previously rejected the bids, we knew we were going to put them back out later in the year,” Fann said. “The dynamics have changed with construction industry so maybe more people will bid, and maybe we’ll have more competitive bids out of it.”

He added that “two new contractors have contacted me besides the two who bid before, one is that is doing the water plant building.”

That company, Prime Contractors, is one of many who are likely to seek to build the new events center.

Fann added that he was satisfied with the job the company completed on the Water Treatment plant at Big Spring Park, which underwent major work to rehab the building’s exterior with the stripping away of old paint and fixing of mortar. That project is completed, and another at the park is about to begin, Fann said, as the channel work bid out and approved by the state and federal authorities for the stream can now be completed without anyone in the way, or major park access being blocked during the summer months.

For now, the site for the future Lankford Events Center remains cleared following demolition work completed earlier in the year to get ready for construction.
