Bulldogs struggle and fall to Troup on road

LaGRANGE — A rare Thursday night game left the Cedartown Bulldogs with something just as rare this season — a loss.

After battling to a 20-13 lead in the first half, Cedartown fell behind in the third quarter and never recovered as it lost to Troup County 23-20 in a Region 5-4A showdown at Callaway Stadium in LaGrange.

“You can’t turn the ball over five times, two of them on kickoff returns, and expect to beat a good football team,” Cedartown coach Scott Hendrix said. “We made enough mistakes and that ended up getting us.”

The Bulldogs (5-3, 2-2 Region 5-4A) gave up a touchdown and a field goal to Troup County (7-1, 4-0) to start the second half. Cedartown tried to storm back late in the game, coming close on a fourth-and-19 play with seconds left on the clock, only to watch the ball fall incomplete as time ran out.

Quarterback Trevon Wofford had a 1-yard touchdown run and two TD passes to Quan Neal in the first half, one of which was a 35-yard grab in the final seconds to give Cedartown the one-score lead at the break.

“He (Neal) made a couple of good catches and stepped up for us, but we made too many mistakes in the second half to get in a rhythm to beat a good team,” Hendrix said.

Overall, Cedartown put up 413 yards of offense compared to Troup County’s 358.

Cedartown will host Sandy Creek for its last home game of the regular season Oct. 28.
