Polk GOP honors vets

November 11 is Veterans Day, a holiday honoring men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces.

On Saturday morning, Nov. 5, the Polk County Republican Party at its Annual Veterans Day Breakfast at the Cherokee Country Club said "Thank you for your service."

It's a phrase that's come to define how America expresses gratitude for its men and women in uniform to six of its members.

Veterans being honored were Bill Byrne, a United States Marine Corps helicopter pilot who served 2 tours in Vietnam, Chesly Chambers, a U.S. Army Veteran, Mike Davenport, a U.S. Navy Veteran, William Farrer, a 91 year old retired Navy Veteran who served during World War II, Korea and Vietnan, Larry Reynolds, a Navy Veteran, Ken Suffridge a retired Air Force and Army Veteran, and Carl Usury served in the US Navy during the Cold War.

They all made brief statement about their time in service.

The 33 members in attendance enjoyed a full breakfast, fellowship and a short business meeting.

Elected officials present included State Senator, Bill Heath, State Representative Trey Kelly, Probate Judge Linda Smith and County Commissioner Jennifer Hulsey.

The party will not have a meeting in December, but, will have a January 9, 2017 Executive Board meeting to select a nominating committee for the up coming election of officers.

March 11, 2017 has been designated for the Polk County GOP County Convention, with a location to be determined.
