The flagpole returns to Aragon
The crews were out early on the morning of Nov. 16 with cranes and trucks bringing a special delivery to the Brenda Gazaway Municipal Complex in Aragon.
This long awaited delivery was lifted into the air and stood proudly where it had once been before as the City of Aragon got a piece of it’s history back on display with the return of the old mill flagpole to the front of city hall.
After weeks of restoration work provided voluntarily with the help of local businessman Andrew Heaner, the city still has one last task to do before it becomes official: hold a celebration.
City Clerk Sandy Norman said on Nov. 17 that plans are in the works to give the flagpole a true homecoming celebration in the coming weeks.
With the return of the flagpole to city hall, the one which replaced it now stands at the mill pond.
In past months, the old flagpole which had previously been removed due to its condition was found by building inspector and code enforcement officer Danny Forsyth, who asked Heaner if the flagpole could be restored, might the city take it back and put it back up.
With Heaner’s help, the restoration of the pole and the copper ball called a fineal which sits on top was completed without any cost to city taxpayers other than to pay for the public works crews to prepare the ground for the installation.
